At the moment I only have a mini itx box running Ubuntu and Xbmc with a external 2tb hard drive connected to it.

Can this be turned or any good for a server?

I am thinking of putting it under my stairs as that space is not used for anything. Anyone know how many hard drives this unit can take. Hope 4.

Do I need to have a cable link to my XBMC box under my telly or can it be wifi?

playing 1080P via WiFi is not recommended......
but yes, u can access the files on your server via WiFi.....
you need a WireLess Router of course...

that DELL PC seems Ok but we need to know how much drives it can hold...

Also, like if u plan on using unRAID Basic,
which is free for up to 3 drives (4TB storage + 2TB parity)
u need to verify if the built-in LAN Chipset is compatible with unRAID,,,,

if its not, you'll need to check if u can add this PCI addon card to it
[NIC] Intel PWLA8391GT 1000Mbps PCI ($30 + $0)
which is unRAID proof
