4k playback issues
#1
Hello,

Really apprecaite some help here.

Log here:  https://paste.kodi.tv/vofoqaxova.kodi

In short, when I try and play a 4k movie, the movie and audio end up out of sync.  Then, kodi seems to want to catch up and plays the video fast to catch up to the audio.

I have gpu_mem set to 320MB and I tried setting it to 512, which didn't help.

I'm running Kodi as a service on Raspberian Buster (18.7).  I use my pie for other things, so that's why Kodi as a service rather than Librelec (for example).

I have an external USB 3.0 HDD where the movie file (which is a 62GB Bluray REMUX mkv) is stored.

This issue affects other similar mkv files, so I don't believe it's a bad encode.  Other smaller files (1080p files) play without issue.

Not sure what other information is required, or I can provide, but I'm ready to do whatever is needed.

You log doesn't include debug info. Ideally enable debug, restart kodi, play file then grab log.
Do all 4k files do this, or just this one?
Posting mediainfo of file would be useful.

Can do.
Yes, all of the similar ones (in encoding etc).
Can do.

The above is the file that has to original issue as described.  It is a Bluray REMUX.

The above is a smaller file size.  It is a 10 bit HDR encode.  This one basically works, but there are very small sound glitches in it when it's played.  I can see on my AVR the display flicker away from Dolby Digital ever so breifly when it occurs.

The first file rather unusually includes 2 video tracks (a 4K and a 1080p). I don't know if that could cause an issue.
You should be able to remux to an mkv file with only one video track with MKVToolNix or ffmpeg (without reencoding).
It may be interesting to test that.

Also it may be interesting to see if is is handled better in Kodi Matrix (e.g. try with latest build from here).
The video decode and display path is very different on Matrix.

https://paste.kodi.tv/diyefibafa.kodi - now with debug info Smile
Nearly all 4k files have some sort of an issue.  Most similar to this, but not as severe, those I haven't tried that many different files.

I've seen this on many files.  Including TV encodes that are only 1080p.  But I don't want to confuse things.  So one issue at a time.

BTW, thank you for your help, I really appreciate it popcornmix.

Can you try the most recent pi4 build here:
https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=343068

(use a spare sdcard, or backup first as not all add-ons are compatible with kodi 19 yet).

Do you get the same issues?

I'm not really in a postition to do that right now.

Is there anything from the log files that you can see?

Also, isn't Kodi Matrix not due out till mid 2021Huh  Not keen on waiting until then.

Did this.  Removed the 1080p track (and all the non English audio tracks/subs) and it made no difference.

Most development effort is now aimed at Matrix though - so confirming you don't have problems on Matrix is likely to assist the volunteers who write Kodi, and if that works, there is a chance that some kind person will back port the fixes to the current stable release I guess?  That said - the way video playback is handled in Matrix is significantly different to Leia I think so that might not be possible.

That's an excellent point noggin.  Might take me a week or two, but I'll do it.
