Embedded subtitles not working
#1
When playing a recorded TV file I am unable to display the embedded subtitles.  When I try to turn on the subtitles using the OSD controls only None is available, if I use the keyboard shortcut I get a notification saying Subtitles Not available

I have set Enable parsing for closed captions to ON in Settings/Player/Subtitles.

The subtitles are displayed correctly when playing the file in VLC version 3.0.20 and MediaPortal version 1.32.

I am using Kodi 20.4 on an 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i3-1115G4 NUC running Windows 11 23H2.

I see it has Teletext Subtitles, have you tried enabling them in Kodi's video player settings?

Thanks Hitcher, I hadn't thought of that as all the other media players I have used in the past have treated the teletext subtitles as "regular" subtitles.  Selecting teletext and entering page 801 does show the subtitles.

The main problem with displaying the subtitles using teletext is that I can no longer skip though the files; I need to turn off the teletext first.

Is there any chance that Kodi will treat teletext subtitles like regular subtitles in the future?

Not that I'm aware of.

From the log I see you are using v20.4 so could you try V21 as the subtitle handling has been completely rewritten in v21 so there's a chance the behaviour is different. You can install v21 Beta 3 or a Nightly in Portable Mode if you want to leave your exisitng install untouched see https://kodi.wiki/view/Portable_mode

Hi jjd-uk,
attached is the full log for playing the same recording as above in 21.0-BETA3 compiled 2024-02-25; unfortunately the subtitle behaviour is the same as above.
Also note that I first tried to test this with the 21.0-BETA3 release but the Argus TV plugin didn't work correctly in that version.

Ok so I guess that is just the way it is for teletext subtitles at the moment.

The person last working on subtitles was @CastagnaIT so perhaps he can provide feedback if there's any plans to make any changes for this type of subtitles.

I believe that @enen92 has done some work on Teletext related stuff so may know if it's possible to change this behaviour.
