i have the same problem
i runnig xbmc live beta1 with nvidia 190.42 buitlin
but when i play mkv or some hd content i have stuttering
have 4 gb of ram in dual channel mode on zotac ionitx-a mb
i have reserved 512 mb of ram for video but no change

Make sure you have the right modelines in your xorg.conf search this forum for posts.
That helps against 90% of all stuttering.

I ended up just installing Windows 7 and having MPC as a external player..

Isn't your problem related to the fact that there is a VDPAU bug in beta 1?

In one of the versions of 9.11 beta1 was a bug that would disable vdpau hardware acceleration if i recall.

I had same problem - Karmic, 190.42 drivers and 9.11 xbmc beta1 (on Revo R3610)... jitter.
