my htpc system is xbmc live cd 9.11 installed to HD, then upgrade to svn newest version, I think it's 28256. My display card is NVidia G210 w/ 512m ram. 190.53 driver version.

After the upgrade, something didn't work as before. I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to switch to a console, it only give me black screen with little green lines at top 1/5 of screen. I can not quit XBMC to console also. Reboot works as usual. I can still ssh to my htpc.

any hint?

after followed http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Ubuntu_Suspend_/_Wake modified policykit.conf, my xbmc can shutdown but still no console.

when shuting down, it shows a corrept green screen insteed of text screen showing shutdown progress, same as ctrl-alt-F2, so maybe something wrong with nvidia driver that can not switch back to text mode?

I don't think it's Nvidia related since i got the same problem, using r28256 on Ati Radeon 4650...

I had this problem after upgrading xbmc-live and nvidia to 190.53. I had to remove "splash" from the grub kernel list, the vga=XXX was not sufficient. My hardware is a first gen Asrock 330. FWIW, or if ppl come here via google.

google : xbmc virtual terminals disappear. xbmc no console after exit. xbmc live no virtual terminals. xbmc no login prompt.
