You shouldn't need to choose the quality. Xbmc will do it based on the bandwidth limitation setting. You'd also screw up any Set-Cookie values returned to the top-level m3u8 (hdnea).
All that aside, hls would be awesome. I've tested the hls streams with ffmpeg (tls is required) and they work fine.
