Should be possible. The addon needs to call the publishPoint url with type "dvr".

This would be an awesome feature addition. I have the same problem being a Pens fan living on the West coast.

Streams of "gs=dvr" seem to be only available shortly after the game ends :-(
(NFL gamepass provides them earlier)

A feature "watch from beginning" for live NHL games needs changes in the used ffmpeg implementation.
With all these bugs/missing features regarding HLS the best solution is really a custom HLS client (imho at least).

There is a custom HLS that the MLBMC plugin uses, and I believe initially before HLS was supported natively in XBMC Carb0 was using it for this app. The nice part about that is that you could set a pre-buffer time, which should eliminate some of the buffering we see.

The downside would be because of the external HLS binary, the add-on could not be available in the XBMC repo.
