while I don't have an explanation for those issues, I can tell you that a clean install of 5.95.2 in EFI mode is the best way to go. I doubt anything prior to 5.x has proper support for Broadwell anyway, possibly not even the early 5.0.x builds. Start with a known working quantity and go from there.
