chocco, no. It's just decoded elsewhere.
It you don't have Atmos or DTS:X the only benefits are the receiver is doing the decoding in hardware so negligible less power drain and some metadata can be lost converting to PCM before the receiver (dialog norm) but if you have a properly calibrated system it doesn't matter.
While I would disagree with Koying about 4k being a fad (I don't think he means it, but the content isn't there really yet and probably for awhile) passthrough vs decoding on device is really just a difference in how you peel an orange.
