Attach a usb Keyboard and hit the "O" key to bring up the Codec OSD panel and you will soon see what is going on and how video is decoding.

I find it very hard to believe someone cannot tell the difference between Hardware deinterlacing and Bob Software deinterlacing, particularly when you start viewing 576i content that is mpeg2 encoded.
A H264 / 1080i combo will lessen the degraded visual impact (if using Bob) due to the increased resolution and superior encoding routines baked into the codec itself.
