The extra video links were indeed to sources in files mode - BUT there was also the possibility to 'type in' the path desired... so that a video link could point to a smart playlist (e.g. Docos with the genre Documentaries in it).
This way, you could either have the extra video links point to files in the basic sense, or you could cleverly define a smart playlist and pretend you had separate libraries.
Anyway my point is there was the ability to: (1) select a folder; or (2) 'type in' the location, in order to use smart playlists
