I would generally prefer to do that, however the upscaling on my Vizio P65-C1 is atrocious for anything less than 1080p. Most of my source material is 720p and 1080i broadcast recordings that I'd like to sharpen up a bit more than the Vizio can do.

Kodi on the Shield does a very respectable job of upscaling from my experience. There's some great tips here:
