I tried with Linux :-) all fine. Hehe.
I got the firmware update tool for 1.72 from here
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downloa...duct=95069
It's a windows tool.
I run linux/single-boot on my J4205 htpc - Fedora 26. - 4.13.10-200.fc26.x86_64. With an AVR X2300W.
Do you need to flash this new firmware using the tool by booting windows from USB (hopefully not!), or does the kernel load the binary as a blob? If the latter which .bin did you use and how did you replace the old one in your system?
