I'd need more information and a complete debug log (wiki), 'still don't play' doesn't give us much to go on.
If you don't use the add-on directly but only use it for trailers, or sharing from remotes etc, see post #2 for the alpha version. In the alpha version playback doesn't require API access, so anything using plugin://plugin.video.youtube/play/?video_id= urls should work without keys.
Just to let you know, I tried 6.7.0 Alpha 2 today and had to use Kore to share a YouTube video from the Firefox browser to Kodi. I usually use Yatse as my Kodi remote but that made it pop up the message about needing API keys.
When I hit the share button in the browser on the phone it shares 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etc' or 'https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=etc' to either Kore or Yatse, but with Yatse something's different with the message by the time it gets to the YouTube add-on.
I also tried the Sky News, Nasa, and ESA Videos plug-ins and they work. The Kurzgesagt add-on unfortunately doesn't work.
As I'm trying to degooglefy as much as possible I'm reluctant to use API keys but I do understand what's happening with the previous set-up (a limited set of API keys shared between all Kodi users and subject to Google changing the usage limit and T&Cs). It would be nice if a couple of other basic things worked without API keys (e.g. search, channel listings) but I understand that would need a big re-design.
But anyway, that was my 6.7.0 Alpha 2 testing. The guy in charge of Yatse is pretty responsive so he may already be fixing this.
