I honestly don't know if my running with uncompressed media has anything to do with the background images working or not, but here's more info:
Someone has already posted/linked to how to use the uncompressed media (extract archive / delete textures file)
1) For movies and TV shows, I use the custom multiple file path. I have a folder named \backgrounds on my movies drive where I have EMM copy a .jpg of all movie fanart, another folder named \backgrounds\TV where I manually copy over fanart for TV shows, etc. I just pointed to those folders in the menu customization section of settings
2) for photos / trailers / other, I just use a single static image. I have a folder named \backgrounds\misc where I copied a bunch of jpg files and just point to them using the same settings menu.
I don't know if its the use of .jpg for backdrops, the uncompressed media folder, the fact that I re-set the path to the files (using the UI), or what, but I haven't had any issues with background art not loading.
Also - I'm on LIVE RC2 if that makes any difference.
