FlexRAID is an option too ... I think anything is cheaper than Drobo.
I'm currently running a home built server - Supermicro motherboard, i3 cpu, 8GB RAM + supermicro sata cards, 11x2TB+1x3TB disks. Windows 2008 R2+Flexraid (Parity is stored on a separate HP NAS box). Feeds 4 XBMC Live boxes (lounge, bedroom, mancave and kitchen(!)). I use Wiimotes as controllers, MySQL database running on the server.
You could probably build out that whole server including storage for what you'd pay for the drobo and a couple of 3tb drives .. would run fine on flexraid or unraid.
Guess it depends if price or convenience is your pain point ...
