@Discotech: Do you use the windows-build (a.k.a. the exe-file)?
this is very strange - I just tried a direct database search on my server and via the API:
When I search in the database, I can find an entry, it leads to this:
http://musicbrainz.org/release-group/5ac...98abad7e8b (or: http://tbueter.com:3000/release-group/5a...98abad7e8b) which is quite correct. But if I search for the ID via the API I cannot find the release... Probably a bug on musicbrainz'-side. They definetly let you search via the ID, but it won't yield any results...
I will leave my server up and running, I still think that it probably would be best if the user can decide which mb-database is being used (or, even better: Define multiple servers).
