I was having the same struggle myself (XBMCbuntu Eden, Final). I followed the solution suggested in this thread and thankfully, it worked for me!

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install --reinstall gdm xorg

That didn't work for me. In fact, it's probably a bad idea since XBMCbuntu runs on LightDM, not GDM. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Anyone else have any luck solving this problem? I'm having the same issue.
