Good way to measure the quality of a box is to browse this subforum requests for help: count the occurrence of MX or whatever junk vs. Wetek, Minix, Nvidia and you'll picture at least the quality of support you get from the vendor...

Hi guys!
If you had to choose a TV box to play videos, film (at least 1080p, h.265), music and photos in any format from an external hard disk, no stuttering or lag problems, with a simple and intuitive UI which would you rather have: beelink i68, zidoo x6 pro, himedia h8 octa or himedia q5? Or whatever?
Thank you!!

Fastest ARM box available, UI made for the TV, 23.976 auto frame rate switching, HD audio pass-through (still a WIP for Kodi though), Nvidia is a Kodi Sponsor and has been working with Kodi devs and Nvidia has so far been really good at providing support.

Yes, you can attach a HDD to the SATV and it supports most common formats/codecs. You want be able to play 3D MVCs if you need that.
The only real limitation is that Kodi won't be able to write to the HDD (last I checked) as it's a limitation of Android 5, but that should change once the Marshmallow update is out supposedly by the end of the year. But I would suggest using a NAS or attach your HDD to your PC or if your router supports it, to it.

To write to the hdd is not a problem for me, because i just want to use the box to read contents directly from an external hard disk.

From reading this and many other forums and post it seems that the Nvidia Shield and the minix neo x8-h plus seems to be the prohibited favorites. The x8-plus is known for its outstanding firmware that runs super smooth for video. The Shield has better specs and, a nice game controller.
I am currently using a pivos xs with linux that has good support and development which is also key to me.
I am leaning towards minix neo x8-h plus for the living room and possibly the pivos xs+ which has the same specs as the x8-h plus but will not be out until early in the new year and is almost half the price.

If you're willing to wait the new coming Amlogic S905 boxes look promising. At least I am waiting with buying a box myself until these boxes have been introduced.
