Why did this appear and what is the difference between Movies and Videos (both have the same sources) ?
Videos is the main "group" containing all the videos you have given XBMC access to. Movies takes you directly to the movie library and TV Shows will take you directly to the TV Show library. If you go to System\Settings\Skin you will find some options to add these to your home menu. I also recommend the Skin setting under Home Window Options called ""Videos" button always goes to video "Files"." What this means is that when you choose "Videos" in the main menu you will be taken to a "File" view of your videos. Think of this as a Windows Explorer type view of your videos. Here you will see all video sources you have added to XBMC and browse them as if they are folders. In the library view modes of TV Shows and Movies things will be ordered differently and only items that XBMC's scraper could identify will be listed. In those library views you also have a lot more options to how your items can be sorted.

After beginning scanning to the library (still unfinished) here are some observations:

(1)
I have several movies split into 2 parts (CD1, CD2) etc. but they appear with the same name.

For example, Ben Hur CD1 & Ben Hur CD2 appear twice in the library as
Ben Hur
Ben Hur

(2)
The library ignores the release date which I always include in the file name.

For example if I have 'House of Wax [1953].avi' and 'House of Wax [2005].avi'
they appear in the library as

House of Wax
House of Wax

Is there a way to retain the original file names in the library ?

(3)
I'm getting duplicate movie names even though the movies are different.
(due to unfinished scanning ?)

For example;
(a)The library shows 25 movies called 'Battleship' along with the same poster, but they are all different movies.

(b) The library shows me about 40 movies called 'Cars 2', along with the poster for Cars 2, only problem is ..... I *don't* have 'Cars 2' on my HDD !!!

I'm assuming this issue is due the scanning being unfinished ... I'll wait and watch.

Thanks !

I think you need to spend a bit of time reading the wiki on file structure and such for better scanning results. As for question 2, they will both show up Called House of Wax, as that is there official title. They should each have a different meta data and images though. Some third party skins may have an option for showing the year when showing the title though if that is what you want.

The crux of it is:
Have a root folder called Movies. Inside that folder have a separate folder for each movie. Name each folder the exact name of the movie including the year in (). Then in the content scanning options you can choose the option that each movie is in its own folder with name that matches the movie title. Also turn on scan recursively. Also go down to the settings button and make the whatever changes you like to your scraper of choice.

Now before you start again, the best thing may be to ditch your current video database and start fresh as it sounds like it may currently be screwy. You could change the source content to none and have XBMC remove everything from that source from the db, but since you are just starting I'd kill the old one and start fresh. You can find the video database file in your userdata folder.

1- the two part films should be labeled movie -CD1, -CD2 it's the minus sign that XBMC looks for, and you have to have 'stacking on' that's the left hand slide out menu with the movie folder in focus. It will then be listed as one, to make this simple as possible.. use the settings>system>clean-up tool before and after you've re-scarped, check with the movie information page to make sure you see the actual path starting with the word 'stack'. e.g. stack://D:\movies\movie-cd1.avi,D:\movies\movie-cd2.avi I've never felt comfortable telling people the best way to stack & scrape... I found just moving the file off XBMC and doing a clean-up to eliminate the dups/metadata etc. and then a re-scraping was the simplest.

2-Skin dependent and view dependent... all my movies are named 'movie (date)' and show up in most skins as such... depending on the view you pick.

3-If the movie isn't the same.. but the IMDB or The MovieDB doesn't seem to be able to make a fit... it decides to put something without human intervention, so let's call it human error. When you get into the swing of things... you'll find multiple names for a movie... the best deliminator is the date in brackets, but even then you'll end up with issues... like the movie Nine vs the movie 9 .. small things like plural etc... The good part is that once you've scraped these into your library... (and exported as single files) a local re-scrape is very fast... typically under and hour for 2TB. On occasion you'll get as stubborn file that you know is listed.... a manual scrape with the IMDB id tt0000417 number will smooth you along.. you can pick up the number from the URL line in your browser if needed.

a-is that all... 25?, I would have thought at least 65... the date will help, looks like a manual scrape.

b-40 movies called Cars 2.. yes I can believe that. more if you search for Cars Two... without date. use theRenamer.com great program to clean up all those nasty naming conventions.

Outside of the wiki's which every new user should have a peek at... (links to the top of the page)
here's few links that are outside view points that sometimes offer a new perspective and understanding of this extra fabulous program.

Ok, I'll try to understand and implement all these suggestions...

....and to think that all I ever wanted to do was just find a way to
quickly go to a movie left half-watched the previous night....... :-P

Thanks!
