Hi, what is the best choice for MKV and DoVi now ? Keep Profile 7 (so both layers and don't lose quality for future even if EL is ignored now) and let Kodi do the conversion to 8 ? Or convert directly to Profile 8 ? Thank you !

You can just keep profile 7 files and have Kodi convert them. It's equivalent, just more convenient to keep original profile 7.

Thank you, so I'll use DGDemux and check the MakeMKV method for DoVi, not Profile 8 conversion

I realize this is an older thread, but I am now seeing grey bars on my older Sony TV with Kodi 21 RC2 playing h.265 with HDR10 and Dolby Vison. I just started using HDR content so I am late to this conversation. Were these merges supposed to take care of this issue? I have been out of the loop for quite a while.

No. In fact they reverted an old workaround that was in place for Sony TVs specifically for this issue.
It was reverted because it causes issues on other devices.
See https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/22561.

You should open an issue on GitHub. Currently there is no way to correct this at all.
It should be feasible to at least have an advanced setting that would restore the old workaround.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll do just that. My neighbor has a newer Sony TV, I'll test it on his as well. For now, I at can at least turn it off on the TV for those files that have the issue.

Same issue here, Gray bars are now visible and its unplayable, Sony TV was my main TV, Enabling DOlby Vision fixes it but the video lags hard. Why would u screw tons of people using this Sony tvs to fix it for other people issue, that makes no sense. You are in the same situation now where people stuff are broken, no matter the site. First Sony Had no issues and others did now its the other way around. How is this a solution to the problem ?

When you say enable Dolby Vision, are you referring to a setting on your Sony TV or within Kodi?

I've started a thread looking for support to add an advanced setting to toggle the workaround. It would need a developer willing to add that feature.

Enabling Dolby Vision in the Kodi Menu reproduces correct color on the UI, but it is laggin really hard. I have never used Dolby tbh with Kodi on my TV even tho Dolby works on it fine, tested with other player. Point being i just want HDR and nothing else. It used to do HDR if the movie was DOLBY it just converted it to HDR. Now there is an issue where if Dolby is on it lags and if its off HDR is played fine on the same movie with good colors, but everything around it is bad. The ui is washed out along with the black bars.

Also issue created, i am not willing to go though the hassle of creating logs when this has already been gone though and it was FIXED in v20. I have had KODI for 5 years since i bought the TV and never had issues. This is frustrating tbh i have been trouble shooting all day today just to learn it was a "FIX" that was removed. That blows.

Adding an advanced setting toggle would be amazing.

Good day,
I have owned a SONY KD-55XE9005 with Android for about 6 years. For 1 ½ years I have been using Kodi directly on the TV, saving myself the additional box via HDMI. So far everything has worked perfectly.

The following errors have occurred since the new Kodi V21 update:

1. Subtitles that were previously white are now gray.

2. For all HDR10, HDR+ and Dolby Vision videos where bars have been removed, these are now gray and also seem to be somehow transparent.

As far as I know, the SONY KD-55XE9005 can only do HDR10, HLG, or RGB. I tried changing the color spaces, BT 2020, BT 709 and RGB, but nothing helped! The bars are still gray and slightly transparent and the subtitles are still displayed in a medium gray.

Question: Can I undo the update to the previous Kodi version? And if so, how can you do that without losing all the settings? It took me a long time to connect my hard drive to the Fritzbox via the network and set it up.

Best regards

The change adds a setting under the Videos/Processing section, where users can choose which HDR type should be allowed.
By default, the video bitstream is kept intact, so all metadata is kept.

If you don't want HDR10+, uncheck HDR10+.
If you don't want Dolby Vision, uncheck it.
...
I'm interested in any feedback regarding the changes made, especially if there are regressions.
Or if it helps devices that I haven't listed as having problems.

Since you said you're interested in any feedback regarding the changes, I recently posted the following topic:
https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=377680

Basically, I know myself and others (I've seen other topics on here, Reddit, and other websites) would love to have an HDR priority setting. This would be particularly helpful with hybrid files since sometimes Kodi will choose an HDR format which isn't the preferred one. In other words, not the one which looks best on the user's specific TV. In the case of 10+ vs DoVi, it is possible using the setting above to manually disable one to force it to play using the preferred HDR version. However, you then must remember to re-enable it afterwards so there's not confusion some other day if you're trying to play a video which only has the HDR type you previously disabled. Having to routinely go through this manual disable/enable process is not ideal. And it doesn't even do anything to resolve occasional problems in which Kodi defaults to basic HDR 10 instead of DoVi in a hybrid file. I realize that doesn't always happen but I have seen it happen on some videos and was left with no option but to play those using a different player. As such, for various reasons, it would be extremely useful to have an HDR setting whereby users could prioritize formats.

Thanks for your consideration of this feedback / request.

In theory Kodi is already supposed to prioritize Dolby Vision.
If it doesn't, your issue is either of:
- The TV
- The file

Thanks for your reply. The TV definitely supports Dolby Vision. I have played MANY DoVi videos and observed the icon confirming it in the upper right of the screen at the start of playback. Regarding the file, I'm not sure how to follow-up on that since the hybrid files which Kodi 21 wouldn't play as Dolby Vision, I could get to play with it using some (but not all) other players. Therefore, it seems to me like a Kodi issue. Likewise, as mentioned, I've read several other topics (here and elsewhere) with Kodi users discussing the same problem and seeking a solution for how to force Dolby Vision... in most cases, although I do remember at least one person who felt that 10+ looked better than DoVi on their TV and wanted to prioritize it instead.

I can't help you if you don't provide either a sample or debug log.

Kodi doesn't have a mechanism to prioritize HDR formats. They are too complicated.
It's only aware of Dolby Vision and tries its best to make sure it's used whenever the firmware says it can be.
There are systems that don't play well with profiles restrictions, so this is the only thing you might be having issues with.
