Android Nvidia Shield Android TV (Updated Jan 26 2017 - 5.0 update)
Be sure to power on the SATV *after* your avr/TV.
Otherwise, SATV cannot detect the capabilities of the other device and apparently never recover, so you're stuck with default 60Hz.

I'm confused!

I have a 4K TV, a 2015 model 4K receiver(set to upscale all incoming video to 4K) and a NSTV pro.
When playing back 4k movies, and while pressing Z in Kodi (latest nightly built), I see 3840*2160 -> 1920*1080, but my tv says 3860*2160p.
Is Kodi downscaling my 2160p media to 1080p and making the nVIDIA hardware scale back up to 2160p againHuh
This is hopefully not true, right?
In Kodi 15.2 I see 3840*2160 -> 3840*2160p and that is how it's supposed to be, to preserve full 4k detail, right?

I'm even more confused by your explanations Wink debug log (wiki), please

SORRY.

In KODI 15.2 from Google Play, when playing back a 4K movie I see Sizing: (3840.2160 -> 3840,2160)
In KODI kodi-20151103-b010ce9-master-armeabi-v7a. when playing back a 4K movie I see Sizing: (3840,2160 -> 1920,1080)

So according to the information when pressing Z during playing, I get my 4K movie down scaled from 2160p->1080p in KODI right? Or is this information in the "Z" info screen not true? I think it is.

Now my TV is still saying that it is receiving a 2160p signal. So somewhere from the output from Kodi to my TV, there is an up scaling happening from 1080p to 2160p. But all the nice EXTRA details in my 4K movie are lost during Kodi's downscale from 3860,2160->1920,1080(accoring to the Z info screen).

I just did a check with the 4K image test pattern found here: http://www.cnx-software.com/2014/09/26/t...t-pattern/

In Kodi 15.2 the full resolution is displayed, there is no scaling! I see the black and white dots on my TV.
In kodi-20151103-b010ce9-master-armeabi-v7a, Kodi 16 beta1 the test image is blurred, so scaling is definitely happening. But I can't confirm because the Z info doesn't work in Pictures.

The NSTV's sole idea of being a true 4K media player WITH Kodi is broken in Kodi 16 beta1.

Hope this will be taken serious.

Still confused. Please test it out.

I will upload a debug log asap.

What's confusing is:
- Where do you see "(3840,2160 -> 1920,1080)"? I got this on my avr, but it means the avr is receiving 4K and outputting 1080p
- "Z" on a keyboard is mapped to "Aspect Ratio" by default in Kodi, so what does "Z" do for you and where?

A screenshot of the overlay you're seeing might help, too.

When pressing the "Z" key on a keyboard during playback, only pressing just once. The sizing info appears.

View Mode : Nomal

Kodi 16b1: Sizing: (3840,2160)->(1920,1080)(Zoome x 1.00) AR:1.78:1 (Pixels: 1.00:1)(Vshift: 0.00)
Kodi 15.2 Sizing: (3840,2160)->(3840,2160)(Zoome x 1.00) AR:1.78:1 (Pixels: 1.00:1)(Vshift: 0.00)

At the bottom line:

Screen Resolution:

Kodi 16b1: 1920x1080H@50Hz - Full Screen
Kodi 15.2: 3840x2160@50Hz - Full Screen

I made screenshots of it, but have to find a way to share them.

I have now set my AVR to "Through", so it's the NSTV that upscales back up to 2160p. Because the TV itself tells its getting 2160p signal. I have a Panasonic 4k TV, and with their iOS app I can see exactly what signal the TV receives. I'll show you a screenshot of that as well.

EDIT:

I uploaded somescreenshots.

The stat doesn't mean anything in this instance. It's just for aspect ratio adjustment.
1920x1080 refers to the size of the framebuffer, which is *not* the resolution at which the video plays.

Furthermore, pictures are not shown in 4K currently in Kodi android, so it's not a proper test.
Please use the "4K_video_test_pattern.mkv" video linked in the same page you mention. If the green text is legible, you're in 4K (the dot thingy doesn't work because of post-processing by your TV, or at least mine).

Thank you. Harmony remote doesn't allow the Shield to power on before my avr. A reboot while avr is on fixed issue.

Well, when I say "power on", I actually mean "put the plug on" or reboot. From then on, the shield is just sleeping and it doesn't matter.

What about the bottom text that says: Screen Resolution: In my world, it's information that should tell the user what resolution is being output during playing. Just as with the framerate(hz) Why is it shown differently in 15.2 vs 16b1?

http://imgur.com/a/Td7Xr

Please take a look at the System Info -> Video information pictures.

In 15.2 with the test picture I see the black and white dots. Not in 16b1. Again why is it different from 15.2 vs 16b1? Image processing is always turned of on my TV.

In both 15.2 and 16b1 the 4k video test pattern.mkv file will not even open and playback. It can't even be played back in the 4k media player app build in my tv. So there is something wrong with file. Tried downloading it again, but no luck. Plays fine on PC in MPC-HC though...

I'm not convinced yet, that I see true 4k when playing 4k media. Sorry. Is there another way to check.

We should simply remove anything that mentions something about fps or resolution.

Read the alpha 4 release blog......
And get a Debug Log

Why? So that have no chance to check if everything is done right?

In your youtube video, I see that your "Z" info says Screen resolution is set at 3840x2160@xx and you are using Jarvis.

The Alpha 4 release blog?
You mean the "Android Surface Rendering" section?

What if KODI developers considered developing a KODI version for the NSTV alone, so that we can have 4K user interface, and not get punished with poor 1080p user interface because other android tv boxes aren't fast enough. The same thing you are doing now on the windows platform. DX11 version and a none DX11 version. Android TV Tegra X1 and Android TV none Tegra X1 version.

Oh and now that I have your attention, in the description below your Youtube video your write:

"Additionally the NVIDIA SHIELD TV now also supports pass-through of HD audio (DTS-HD / TrueHD). However currently this is not yet supported by Kodi on the Android platform. One of our developers is currently working on this to get this working for Kodi version 16.So be sure to check the status on the Kodi forum or websites on updates about this topic"

Well I have a real hard time finding the status on this pass-through of DTS HD MASTER and TRUE HD subject that you also mention in the video. Will it make it in the final release of 16?

Thanks

In 15, the picture showed in 4K because there was a temporary hack to make the SATV run Kodi in full 4K. The non-standard hack has now been removed and replaced by the proper way to run the gui in 1080p and the videos in 4K.
I should see if it's possible to have picture in 4K, too, but it's low priority.

This will be my last attempt to convince you Wink

OK I'm convinced! LaughI see the black and white dots now.

One last Koying! Please...

Can you comment on the DTS HD MASTER and True HD pass-through subject. Will it make it in the final version of Jarvis or not? Many many MANY home theater enthusiasts are concerned about this matter. I know many are still holding off from buying the NSTV just because of that single subject. As mentioned before, I'm willing to test it for you.
