I feel really guilty for even mentioning that PR that would've stayed under the radar until it is ready to be discussed, but oh well I expected more of kodi users.

@Leech guy they have said many times the discussion will come after team kodi decides to merge or not, not after it is merged. Stop trying make up a conspiracy theory. The idea is if team decides not to merge then there is no reason for any discussions, if it was decided to be merged then a public discussion will be held in order to bring up points that did not occur to team members while making the decision.
And let's stop calling it "user tracking" as it doesn't have any way of being tied up to a user, if you understand the code you can clearly see that, which is a bit different than what other addons do.
I also want to highlight the difference between a legally registered organization (foundation) with clearly defined staff and a privacy statement "tracking" users through a hashed MAC (you can even see in the PR some comments about tying it to CPU serial which is unfortunately not possible on every platform), and between a random developer sneaking the tracking code without any privacy or encryption into his addon (I am not talking about rob, am sure a lot of addons are doing this specially the banned ones).

When the subject is decided, I am sure the team will release along the discussion a better technical details about how this "tracking" is done, and people will see how hard it is to actually identify the user (not the installation), but for now you can look up the page linked above from Libreelec statement.

Edit: I love also the fact that the team member who was actually suggesting to hold the public discussion and listen to the community in that PR is the same member that is being bashed and painted black here by saying he does not care about the community.
That shows you don't at all understand either the PR or what is proposed.

edit: that was to leechguy
Ok, just to be clear, even if the Team decided to merge that PR, absolutely nothing would be reported to our servers as there is NO sending mechanism included, so the code in that PR currently only allows for the generation of the hash.

One point of discussion if we decided to proceed might be having a toggle switch in settings to disable sending of the uuid (as uuid would likely be enabled by default otherwise it would likely be useless).
SPLIT please !!! how hard can that be so freaking offtopic its ridiculous.

Exactly, and even when I first mentioned the PR (now I wish I didn't) I clearly said that currently it is strictly for displaying on system info screen and even the ability for logging in kodi.log has been removed. But some people like reading half the post and make up the rest WinkWink
@leechguy: Team Kodi don't want to track users, they simply want to count them more accurately than we are able to right now. You want official Netflix? Assuming they ever ask us the question, they're not going to be impressed when we can't say for sure how large the Kodi user base is. That's all the UUID will tell us, that you're unique, but not who you are or where you are or what add-ons you have installed.

To claim that users will be "tracked" is completely untrue, and it sounds like you're just trying to stoke up what will be a complete non-issue.
Texture Cache Maintenance Utility: Preload your texture cache for optimal UI performance. Remotely manage media libraries. Purge unused artwork to free up space. Find missing media. Configurable QA check to highlight metadata issues. Aid in diagnosis of library and cache related problems.
The best analogy I can come up with is:

When voting in an election, I go to the polling station and I'm given a piece of paper with an id on it, this is to ensure no fruad of duplicate votes, the person giving me the paper does not record who is given what id. My vote is entirely anonymous as from that id no one knows who made the vote or where I live from it, only that a unique vote has been cast.
WTF DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ROBS REPO/ISSUES??!!

nothing so quit your wining start a new thread and move on!

seems the only way to get the point across is to use harsh language, so Ronie mind giving me another warning ?
Nothing but that discussion is done and we don't want multiple threads spread across the forum.
Well congrats on realizing, that now please close this thread since its so offtopic its beyond ridiculous.
I hate to be that guy, but the discussion is a little bit related since people mentioning Rob was banned for tracking, and users accusing team members of dealing with double standards.

Edit: however your constant "whining" spam about closing the thread is neither helpful nor related.

your opinion has been noted, thanks for that.
I do not wish to hurt anyone, but does nobody understand this whole thread is a prime example why people dislike IT guys.

There's no need to feel guilty. I did not see you mentioning the PR. I every now and then go through the list of open PRs and came across it a couple of weeks ago already.

And those are my final words on this PR (in this topic).

Sorry for quoting you @melhemk, because you seem to be a reasonable person, but that phrase is just bull.
If you guys, as opposed to us, the evil Team Kodi, want to discuss something, it is convenient to remember the facts.

Rob wasn't banned for tracking. That was just a tiny bit of the mess Rob got himself into.

Rob was banned because (atleast) one of his add-ons has code in place to upload your files with your MAC address attached to a server that, as it turns out, is not even his, without your knowledge.

Given that, WTF? Why are you guys still defending him?

If you're comparing some add-on sending YOUR MAC address and your files to a dubious server without your authorization with Kodi generating an unique, anonymous UUID used for the sole purpose of counting active installs, I have news for you: you should stop posting now!

You either don't understand the full picture and implications or you're just trolling.

BTW, we're not the evil ones, selling our souls for money, etc. We don't sell our souls for money, fame, perks, beer, etc...
Well, maybe for beer. Beer is always welcome. Tongue

Still, its not like we're going behind your backs. Code is public and can be scrutinized.

Thank you very much!
