if the freeze does not happen with the default confluence skin, then it is the fault of whatever other skin you are using.
sudo apt-get install pastebinit
cat /home/xbmc/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log | pastebinit

System -> Settings -> System: Turn on debug logging
Let it crash and give us the xbmc.log in your: /home/xbmc/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log
an easy way to do this on ubuntu is
Code:sudo apt-get install pastebinit
cat /home/xbmc/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log | pastebinit
<audio>
<streamsilence>1</streamsilence>
</audio>
sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio
sudo apt-get remove --purge libasound2-plugins libasound2-plugins:i386
sudo reboot
