A simple ppa swap and apt-get install should do the trick.
(I would purge any existing XBMC ppa so that if thers any package upgrades it wont break xvba stuff)

make sure you have 512MB video Ram! Your nvidia driver is also very old. And then there is pulse audio.

update your video drivers
use xswat ppa should be a 304.64
its not vdpau presuming you enabled the correct settings in XBMC for your machine, also disable xvba and vaapi only use vdpau.
a few optimal settings for Nvidia (30x.x )in my signature last link.

can someone please confirm which PPA/build I should be using? I'm trying to run something as up to date as possible, currently using the xvba-testing ppa which seems to be working great, but I am running an Nvidia card and not sure if there is a better one out there. I dont have any issues at the moment, just checking on what i should be using.

I have now:
The VRAM doesn't seems to be adjustable in BIOS and the nvidia settings program reports 512MB.
I have now:
- updated drivers to 304.64
- disabled xvba and vaapi
- switched from pulse (which was standard) to analog out

You need to purge pulseaudio and libasoun2-plugins you dont need pulse for any audio in xbmc.
You dont mentioned if you looked at the xbmc settings as per mysignature what I suggested, did you?
512MB is enough on Nvidia GPU I have a ION 1 (Asrock ION 330 HT like your signature bios version 1.20) machine with 512MB (which you can set in bios) shared and I dont have a problem, but then again I dont even come close to pulseaudio as its a HTPC and not used for anything else but XBMC.

First, thank you all for providing us with such a nice distribution. Your work is really appreciated and believe me, I'm talking about how great XBMCbuntu is as much as I can.
However, I'm running into an odd issue since this morning. When I boot up my Media Center (it's running on an Asus S1-AT5NM10E), the main XBMC window doesn't appear. All I see is a mouse cursor and a blue background with XBMCbuntu written on it - I'm assuming this is some sort of desktop I'm seeing, that should be hidden when XBMC starts? I haven't changed one thing on the system. It worked just fine yesterday.
I can reach the box through SSH, but I'm not sure which logs to look at to troubleshoot.
Any help would be appreciated! (also would help me with my girlfriend who told me not to upgrade to beta version
)

Looking at the logs, I can't seem to find any reason for the problem. Apparently XBMC crashes because I get a lot of xbmc_crashlog under /home/xbmc. This is what they hold:

Makes sense....just was wondering if you were gonna make an XVBA version. Just out of curiosity, do I need to do a ppa-purge on the old version before hand? Thanks again for all your help!
