Hello All,
I've been running my first unRAID server for about a month or so and I'd like to add my comments. So far I'm very happy with it. I was able to assemble it with some leftover parts but wound up purchasing two 2TB drives, a Corsair CX500 PSU, CoolerMaster 5-in-3 cage along with some fans. BTW, those cages, and others like it are a "cool" way to utilize an existing case.
The system started evolving pretty quickly and certainly you learn as you go. Lime-Technology's user forum offer a lot of good information. Once I got the basic system up and running I started studying their plug-in system. Once you start down that road, you'll probably find it's time to pony up and expand your system to include a cache drive and since this drive doesn't need to be very big it's not much of an additional expense other than paying to get your USB drive registered.
Installing plug-in's is well documented; I use SabNZBd and SickBeard maintained by Influencer, who does an excellent job of support!! Also I have the APC plugin and use SimpleFeatures for web gui. I just don't think you should try to do everything at once. One of the nice aspects of this system is its flexibility.
It pays to read over the unRAID forums and see some of the "horror" stories others have to tell. Just because you have a parity drive there's no guarantee you won't have a problem. I'm still in the "warm glow" days with my system. You have to realize this is a great cost effective system that is well designed, supported and can grow with your needs.....BUT.......
It's probably not a bad idea to have some secondary backup available in your plans or closely monitor the health of your unRAID drives.
Cheers!

The unraid wiki suggests BIOSTAR A760G M2+ Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
Hard to find one except on ebay.
Any suggested alternatives ?

Quick question, will unraid allow me to build it without formatting my exsisting hdd's? i currently had 4x2TB with existing data on them that i dont want to loose.
Also if i were to set it up with the 4 drives can i add additional drives at a later date?

Question: why is it not better to start with a MB with more SATA plugs instead of one with 2-4 and then adding cards to the board. It looks like the 4 SATA plug card is $100 by itself.
I don't undestand the benefit of this over starting with a MB with 6-8 SATA's on it instead?
thanks
