If you don't need to do plex transcoding than its a pretty turn key setup.

I was looking at synologies but it was a higher model. I can probably skip plex and do pi's but iops I do care about. seems the higher up models only do well in iops.

What are your requirements? The DS413j performance specs show 108MB/sec on a 5gb file which is pretty good. The other thing I like about moving to a nas and small appliance based players (atom HTPC and atv2) is the notable decrease in my power bill :-)
