Any updates I can do to my Chromecast to either:
a) mirror my PC
b) stream local files from my PC while allowing me to keep using my PC to perform other functions
thanks!

A chromecast icon will appear and you can then direct the output to your chromecast dongle attached to the tv.

Nais.. So if a cheap chromecast clone arrives, this will be working again with upnp transcoding? Or does Google, Inc. allow UPNP streaming after all?

The problem with chromecast is that it simply isn't that open. What about a usb android stick that will run xbmc? Sending from one xbmc to another is simple in gotham. Or what about simply plugging that tablet into the hdmi port of the tv? Most modernish tablets have hdmi out.

Yeah, the Chromecast is a neat little device but I don't see how it could cleanly act as a media receiver with XBMC. It has limited codec support, and XBMC doesn't do transcoding.
Also, I was sorely disappointed to learn that the Chromecast doesn't work well (or practically at all) in hotel rooms. So if people think this is the golden ticket to bringing XBMC (or even Netflix) with you to a hotel, think again. It doesn't support authentication requirements for most hotel wifi networks, and it requires certain LAN settings that hotels typically have turned off. I'm sure there are exceptions, but this has been well documented now. To make it work you need a laptop with an app like "connectify" which can take the hotel wifi and then act as a router to share it. So, IMO, it's becoming clearer by the day why this thing costs only $35. Hopefully we'll see improvement via firmware updates.
