ok, created filer /storage/.update
Then copied .tar file rebooted - no update
Also copied untar folder to .update - -no update
Obviously I've got it wrong but what?

Just created /storage/.update folder.
Then SFTPed .tar file - Rebooted - no update
Also tried SFTPing untar folder-Rebooted - no update
What I'm I doing wrong?
Also System>File Manager>Add source>Select SMB>Update ---- I can see the FTPed file there.

guess this was happend because i shortly restored from a very old build with a personal skin (sound) setting.

@stilt: somehow you've managed to copy a directory rather than the tar file itself... also why are you using such an old build from 2013? Note that tar updating is only supported by builds from late 2013 (October-ish). Dunno why you had to create the .update folder either - that should have been automatically created by OpenELEC.

Ello.. I'm wanting to mimic my frodo setup from before with a central mysql installation for shared library access. I've just installed wsnipex's new xbmcbuntu as the master. Can I now install this build on my rPis ? Does it use the same database version?

Check with the "Play using..." option in the context menu. Paplayer should be the default if you didn't already have an advancedsettings.xml.
