As someone not too familiar with Linux this does seem a bit daunting. Are there any benefits to running a full Linux distro vs OpenElec if I don't plan to use the box as a pc?

Flexibility. One small example?

OE gives me an wifi thetering that allows my wifi devices to get some internet access.
But then, my chromebox would need to take care of all the nat stuff, manage dns reqs, dhcp leases... My clients wouldn't be on the same network... just ugly.

Using ubuntu, it was easy to configure chromebox's network to bridge ethernet and wifi. All my ip management is done by my central router, the chromebox just acts like a transparent access point.

Can it be done on OE? Maybe... But in ubuntu it's pretty easy by just configuring interfaces and hostapd.

In short, no. Unless you need the full potential of pc usage then OE standalone is the way to go. It makes the box more like a utility, faster boot times, easier setup, easier updates, less resource intensive, etc...

As for the video decoding, you want to use hardware to keep the resource usage low. I wouldn't use a full linux distro if it required software decoding. Especially considering you seem to intend to use the box as strictly htpc. On the other hand it is more versatile using a full distro, so that is a valid point. You could also consider booting chromium from a usb (when needed) while keeping a standalone OE install on the main SSD.

Thank you. I was wondering because I'm having some issue with Ubuntu.

I'm currently running Ubuntu 14.04 with the new coreboot. Everything ran fine for 6 days and now after plugin in a Flirc, I'm having the freezing issue again. Also, since I've updated the coreboot I can't set XBMC to sleep after a certain time because when I wake it up there's no more sound coming out. When I go in sounds setting in Ubuntu there's no device appearing beneath output, I have to hard reboot to make it work again.

And the same stupid overscan problem I'm having since the beginning (Stupid old panasonic tv that can't turn off overscan) make me unable to use the web browser to watch anything. I've tried to ask on ubuntu forum but no luck : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2226141

I am currently looking at getting this ChromeBox but I have a few questions that might change whether I do so.

I would be grateful for any advice.

Ultimately, I am looking for a single device that allows me to run XBMC but also the ability to watch Netflix in 5.1 and also the ability to give me access to Netflix US (with Hola, for example - I am based in the UK).

Thus far, the only option I have found is to build a Windows 8 PC, install XBMC on it and then use the Netflix App to get 5.1 surround sound.

I might have to go down this route if I really have to but I really want to avoid the whole "Windows route" just to watch my TV and films.

Am I thinking that a dual boot with Chrome OS and Openelec might be the answer?

I have never used Chrome OS before but I have read that it although it is based on Linux, Netflix will work on it.

Can anyone confirm whether Netflix does indeed work properly on Chrome's OS and, if so, whether it can offer 5.1 sound output and also the ability to change DNS settings?

Is there a way to dual boot with the updated coreboot ? I'm able to boot inside my openelec installer usb stick and I installed it to another usb stick connected to the chromebox. I was able to choose that stick from the boot menu but It only gave me error and now I can't see the OE USB (the one with the os on it) when I press esc.

I have overscan problem in Ubuntu and with the Chromebox itself. In ChromeOS, I can fix the overscan issue with the built-in tools but not in Ubuntu. My 2009 50inch panasonic plasma tv is the problem there's no option to turn off overscan on that tv. I think I will get overscan issue with chromium since it doesn't keep the xbmc settings but goes fullscreen :/

With updated coreboot the usb stick will boot by default if it is inserted. If you pull it out then it boots internal drive. I haven't had the problems of finicky usb drives others have reported so I can't comment on that....sorry.

However, you should be booting the openelec and then installing that to the SSD, then using a chromium usb for your bootable usb drive. At least if you have performance and reliability issues with openelec. And, OE does have compensation for overscan built in just like any XBMC...if it will also compensate within Chromium addon I don't know. I would test it but my television does not have overscan, sorry.

Hello, I can't speak specifically to the ability to change dns settings within Chrome OS. I would make a strong bet that it doesn't have the abilities you're looking for though. It is a very limited "OS" and doesn't provide much more than a browser with online tools to provide the illusion of an OS. There is very little to tinker with.

I have the same setup, what Ubuntu kernel are you using? Also did you try the flirc fix matt posted: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t...st13007838
I don't own flirc and not sure if in the latest 3.14.x kernel the fix is already there but give it a try. I have kernel 3.14.04 and after 4 , 5 reboots xbmc freeze is almost gone and plex crash is gone.
What settings do you have to not make it freeze?

We have several mesa bugs with this as the IPEHR (according to Ken)

3DSTATE_VF is the last state loaded (other than the resource streamer).
