This is now been done, its part of visualization shadertoy
It would be nice to have a simple 2d spectrum visualization, current one is 3D and spins constantly, and has a perspective angle, you can neither stop the spin fully nor change the perspective angle on it.
If both these additions were possible as visualization setting(s) to current visualization this could be I guess a 2D version.
It would be extra nice if you could also make it fullscreen and be able to choose the nr of bars.
So from something like
to something like this (ignoring the non viz parts of that image ofc)
Or something.

I'd like to see such a viz because I really hate the 3D spectrum, the waveform also isn't a burner and ProjectM has 90% crap presets IMO. Too bad we can't have python vizualisations - at least not that easy according to my last talk with ironic_monkey about a year ago.

Well this 2D spectrum may not see some light but if someone backported the 1001 screen-savers ironic_mokey is doing then there would definitely be a better choice. Though I still hold a candle for a plain 2D spectrum vis

Very nice idea.
Unfortunately finding people who are both good at graphics and can program is very hard, hence the small amount of visulizations released over the years.
Hopefully one day!
I love the 2d EQ visualizations.

I have almost recreated this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptICQtESe64
Or this in lighter version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64DeItg6dgs
Hoping to be able to do this one too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rhnt45KgasE
I've also started playing with getting them into xbmc, which is going somewhat forward.
Can't promise I will ever have something nice but something along these lines should be doable. I too agree that the 3D one is looking a tad dated
Nice.
