Hello everyone, I followed the recommended settings in the wiki page and there is one problem.. Local mkv playback is choppy, severe frames drop and CPU usage is close to or over 100% whenever I disable recommended vaapi method. Turning it back on seems to take care of the problem but the picture doesn't look right.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated
-chromebox standalone
All video settings are default
Tried hard reset and still no go. I'm stuck pls help Sad
I tried to read through all the posts but after an hour it's overwhelming..

I have just run into a diskspace issue. It seems my storage partition has run full:

OpenELEC-Chromebox:~/logfiles # df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
devtmpfs 1990064 140528 1849536 7% /dev

/dev/sda1 9694036 1197120 7981436 13% /var/media/sda1-ata-LITEONIT_LSS-16L

I have not done too much with the system and i wonder why that is the case. If i run out of diskspace now already setup must be wrong or there is some wasted space.

Here is what i found under /storage:

drwxrwxr-x 6 1000 1000 4096 Mar 31 23:44 OpenELEC-Generic.x86_64-5.0.8

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun 23 21:34 tvshows
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun 23 21:34 videos

Most of the dirs are empty but i wonder if can get rid of the OpenELEC-Generic.x86_64-5.0.8 tar and folder?
I am also wondering if there is a way to partition better?

sounds like you disabled VAAPI acceleration altogether, vs the one option which was necessary in the old 4.x builds. With anything 5.x or later, all VAAPI settings should remain enabled (which is the default). I should probably update the wiki page at some point.

looks like you only allocated 1GB for OpenELEC when doing the dual boot setup, which isn't enough. You can delete the installation files (which the script should have deleted, but seems did not), but that's not going to buy you a whole lot. You basically have 2 options: 1) do a factory reset, then re-run the script and choose a larger partition size for OpenELEC, or 2) use a tool like partedmagic to resize the existing partitions to shrink sda1 and enlarge sda7.

Thank you for the response Matt,
The only settings that I disabled was vdpau method and "preferred vaapi rendering method"
The rest of the options are still selected-mpeg2/mpeg4/vc1
The problem is it doesn't happen right away. Movie played fine the first few minutes, CPU stayed around 8-16% and then Boom frame drops, CPU shot up, choppy video.
I have tried 3-4 mkv files all, all behaved the same. They were playing fine in my old wd tv
I reset to factory settings and the "only" option I disabled was "preferred vaapi method" and that was enough to cause it to behave like that...I'm not sure what else todo

What codec are the videos and what is the content? If they are interlaced VC-1 then that's the one format that causes Intel VAAPI hardware decoding issues and it has to drop to CPU decoding.

Hi, thank you for helping. here is the on screen log I took just a while ago while playing Tron (.mkv) ripped from blu ray using makemkv I believe
Image

as you can see the severe frame drops and high cpu usage. It does this sporadically off and on every 3-5 mins or so.

also toggle on/off VC1 Vaapi doesn't change any thing Sad

there's no need to disable 'prefer VAAPI renderer' anymore, not that that is causing the issue

I've run in this before, MakeMKV has some bugs, and I'd bet that's the issue here. Run the file through mkvmerge without changing anything and see if the file it produces plays correctly

from your screenshot, it's an h.264-encoded video, not VC-1, so toggling that setting would have no effect.

Thank you! I will definitely give it a try

With newer libva-driver-intel, that we have in OE since 5.0.8 vc1 interlaced should not segfault anymore. The Decoder will return false and you get a black screen only :-)

Intel had no intetest to ship interlaced vc1 decoding code, though available for at least ivb.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I think I may have screwed something up. I have tried for quite awhile to solve this by myself using this thread and the wiki. I have a Asus chromebox M004U that I originally setup using the info in this thread in May 2014 using a single boot openelec. My plan was to now use a single boot Kodibuntu. So I 1st updated the firmware using the instructions here (logged into openelec using putty). The update appeared to be successful. See output.

Now I appear to be stuck. The chromebox now boots immediately to openelec without giving any time to enter any keyboard command (using a simple wired keyboard). So I try to put unit into developer mode with the paperclip and it still boots straight to openelec. I am obviously missing something that's probably something simple but I sure would appreciate any help on how to proceed from here. Thanks.
