Windows 10 Fall update (1511) broke my SMB!!!
(2016-01-12, 22:22)ziggy73701 Wrote: I found with mine that if I was adding a source it would try and browse a workgroup and then the boxes.... which caused me issues.... id like to clarify again I am in no way saying they are the same issues as you guys are having.. simply I have a working solution with the versions of software that you don't have working.

If it was me, and my thing didn't work... i'd pretty much try anything as it don't work anyway and I would have nothing to lose.

I agree. I will try the .xml when I get a chance.

I have found a workaround until I get it working, and that is to simply use ViMu, a player I bought for my logitech revue back in the day, that plays nice with Samba and plays almost everything that is thrown at it. It is now compatible with androidtv, so it helps me bide time.

Got referred to this thread from Reddit. Go figure my first time setting up Kodi was after MS jacks up SMB with an update. I was, and still am, pulling my hair out on this. At any rate below is a copy / paste of a post I did on Reddit detailing everything i've done thus far. Tonight i'm going to take a closer look at Homegroups, as i didn't take some of the steps detailed here, along with trying a fully qualified path to the share. Will report back if I make any headway.

I'm running OSMC on a Raspberry Pi B+ and Windows10. I've tried everything i can think of and / or Google and i'm still getting wonky behavior. To be more specific if i add a video source i can browse and see my shared folders just fine; the problem being is that usually they don't show the contents being about a dozen or so video files. If something does show up its usually the first three items in the folder which, incidently, i am able to play back fine from the movie library section even whilst getting the 'invalid argument could not connect to network store' message when navigating the videos > files section. There was one brief, shining moment where everything showed up properly in the videos section and then a moment later it was gone, meaning the videos > files > shared folder contents were once again blank and i was bombarded by 'argument invalid' errors. Now the interesting part is if i continuously select the shared folder from the UI i will usually get 'invalid argument' message, however if i just keep selecting it i'll either get an empty folder or i'll get the first three, and at one point, four items from the list which i can play back.

So on the OSMC side here are the paths that i've tried, and honestly they mostly all have the same 'works some of the time but not usually' result, although interestingly if something makes it into the 'movie' library I can always play it back-

smb://hostname/Users/Me/Videos/
smb://ipaddress/Users/Me/Videos/
smb://hostname/Videos/ (this path occurs when using browse rather than manual entry)
smb://ipaddress/Videos/
smb://user:pass@ipaddress/Users/Me/Videos/
smb://user:pass@ipaddress/Videos/

As i write this i'm realizing i never tried a fully qualified path so i'll probably try that tonight. Although the fact that is sometimes sorta works makes me think its not going to be a path issue. Something like- smb;//user:pass@ipaddress/C:/Users/Me/Videos/

Now over to the Windows side-

Create Homegroup
Join Homegroup
Create local user (for user / pass)
Share folders, the go into advanced sharing on the folder and tick off the 'Share this folder' box
Increase IRPStackSize in registry (key didn't exist, had to add, made the value 15 or thereabouts, going to try increasing further tonight)
Increase size parameter from 1 to 3 in registry

Things i haven't done as they seem silly although i might later on tonight just to see what happens-
Disable firewall
Disable defender

I'm kind of feeling that the issue has to be on the Windows side as the setup from Kodi is so straightforward. The 'sometimes it works, but poorly' aspect is throwing me though so i'm not entirely sure. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I agree with you that this feels like a Windows issue, why else would so many people be experiencing it after the update.

is there a lot of noise about this on Reddit?

The only app that I have experienced any issues relating to samba after this new update is Kodi. All windows machines work. All android apps except Kodi that I have tried work including es explorer, total commander, solid explorer, File Expert, Archos, & Vimu. The update didnt bother those apps.

Granted other people have reported NAS issues, but that hasnt been my experience. I'm grateful to Kodi developers for what they do, but its apparent to me that the issue is with Kodi's implementation of Samba (or my application of Kodis implementation of samba). Even if the windows update did initiate the problem, it does not appear to be a windows issue.

Im not so sure its a windows thing, almoat positive its on the android side. Many people in this thread have said that they can run kodi on their laptop and connect to the smb from their pc. When I first encountered this problem I tried everything. What i found to work is i downgraded kodi on my nvidia shield TV to helix and everything went back to normal. Still on helix right now until the app gets an update

Not that I mind, but you misattributed the previous to me.

FWIW... I downgraded to Kodi 14.2 Helix, and everything works now. You can find Helix at http://mirrors.kodi.tv/releases/android/x86/old/ (for nexus player) and it works great, so something appears to have broken between helix and isengard/jarvis so a compare between the code might help.

Thanks thenoan for pointing this out, and I confirm!

Awesome workaround and info! Big Grin

For the folks using Amazon Fire TV Sticks (and other ARM hardware), here's a link to those old versions:

IIRC, kodi 14 still used samba 3.0, so smb protocol 1 (or 2) only.
So downgrading has the same effect as disabling smb 3 on the windows machine.

Weirdly enough, I've always been on 14.2, and I just reverted my Windows 10 back to pre 1511 and it still isn't working

Were you also able to get it working?

That is strange. If you are set up similar to ziggy where one has a samba username/password and attribute the directories it should work.

I used to (3 weeks ago) be able to just right click a folder on my laptop, share with everyone, go on my raspberry pi and add that folder as a video source without needing to use any log in credentials. Was hoping to be able to get that functionality back

UPDATE: I managed to get mine working again by uninstalling win10 1511 and then in KODI I manually typed in the network path for the folder. As with others, not sure if this workaround will do it for everybody but its worth a try. I'm going to try later in the week updating win10 to 1511 and see if that breaks the connection again

Awesome, i'll try that tonight. IIRC Win10 will try to reinstall KBs without prompt unless you run some external MS app with a specific target KB to ignore. Link below.

Is it viable to move backwards in regards to samba?

EDIT: just a quick update. I installed both versions of Kodi on some arm devices, and I am sad to say that I havent gotten them to work at all with SMB protocol on either 14.2 or 15+, although I haven't really troubleshot it yet.

After these MS shenanigans I set one of my PC's to receive the insider updates and there was a big update that downloaded today (and rebooted automatically when I stepped out for a bit, causing me to lose where I was at with my work Angry). Now I can again browse non-windows samba shares via windows explorer and kodi. Doesn't look like there's an easy way to roll back to standard windows 10, so I'm stuck running beta MS software on this PC for the time being - yay!!!
