Android Nvidia Shield Android TV (Updated Jan 26 2017 - 5.0 update)

I'd love to be able to launch that stuff from within Kodi, though. Same with all the apps, actually. I've got Kodi setup so nice that using the default Launcher is lame. Smile

How do i get my Sheild to boot stright into Kodi on a powerup/restart of the system?

You need to install XBMC Launcher, and uninstall updates for the Leanback Launcher, and thirdly you need to disable auto updates for all apps. Updating the Leanback Launcer disables the use for other launchers. When the SATV is updated to Android 6.0 Marshmellow, XBMC Launcher will most likely not work anymore, and we all loses the ability to boot directly to Kodi :-(

Assuming you have adb access to the SATV you can just disable the leanback launcher, Android TV will then revert to any other launcher you have installed, i.e. XBMC launcher this works with Marshmallow.

Very confusing

Can anyone help with this? I'm not questioning why the GUI is 1920x1080, but rather why the Kodi is reporting that the TV is 1920x1080 in versions after 15.2

Debug logs for both:

So after a few weeks I'm not really happy with the picture quality from my shield, specifically blacks. Doing some googling around and it seems like it's a popular topic both here and on the geforce forums, but most of the stuff that's being posted goes way above my head. Some people suggest changing the HDMI from "full" to "limited", but I don't seem to have those options on my TV to (55LG8600) test, and I can't find it on my receiver either.

So far I've gone through all the possible HW acceleration settings, and they don't seem to change anything. I've also looked at the video settings on the Shield itself but there's not much there besides 1080p/60 or 1080p/23.976.

Are there some basic things I can do to improve picture quality? I just installed Jarvic RC1 (I was using Beta5 before).

I have a samsung 55 4K TV and the quality of dark colors is not good too with the shield, even with 720p and sometimes with 1080p files (even with a 30GB movie file)
I was aware that SD files would be a problem but I don't have those, so I am pretty bummed.
I will compare with my htpc this week-end because I don't remember it so bad.

Have you rebooted the Shield since installing the "others" with the TV still on? If not, do so and see if that fixes it.

There are no optimal picture settings. Enable adjust display to refresh rate if you want the correct rate. Kodi is rendered in 1080p already.

Hey all, really hoping someone can help or at least point me in the right direction as I am about ready to see how far I can throw the Shield :-)

I have been running Kodi on an HTPC for several years, however after recently buying a new 4k TV, was unable to use the HTPC without expensive upgrades. As I have heard great things about the Shield, I bought one and the picture quality is great. However...

I have a NAS running FreeNAS with NFS shares of my media. I can easily point Kodi to them and it scans in all the media without an issue (AFAIK). I have two primary issues though that are making me second guess my switch. First, (a relatively minor but annoying thing) when I click on TV Shows on the home screen, it used to take me directly to my TV shows. Now, however, it takes me to Videos, where I can click Files, then TV to see my TV shows. Not a major thing but very annoying and I am not sure if it is related or not to my biggest gripe, which is...

Kodi scans in all my TV shows, however it seems like it only half scrapes everything. For instance, it pulls in every single folder I have on there, even if I have watched everything or if the folder is empty. I do have Hide Watched checked and my old HTPC handled this fine, so not sure why this is. Additionally, it seems like it cannot pull in random info about the TV show, including series description, episode description, or even how many episodes I have for a series. I can play them fine, but even the episode listing looks like it just displays the file name, not the scraped version.

All of the fanart and other pics do show up, and Kodi on my HTPC was fine reading the format I had FileBot process them into (Showname (YYYY)/SeasonX/Showname - SxEE - Episode Title) so not sure why this is happening. I did read where the NFS share has to have the proper permissions, however I have made it so it is NOT read-only and gave all users root privilege. I am hoping I am missing something easy since I have never set up Kodi on the Shield before, but right now it is almost unusable as I have 150-200 TV shows, but only 10-20 of them with episodes. I am on the latest version of everything, and I am not sure what other info would be helpful but please let me know anything additional needed to resolve this. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah, I tried rebooting after installing the other versions. I even did a factory reset the SATV, ran the SATV directly to my TV (vs AVR), and tried different inputs to my AVR - both passthru and set to 4k - same results. No matter what I try the SATV seems to report that I have a 1920x1080 TV on every version except 15.2

This is very strange.

TV model is Sharp LC-70TQ15U

That's normal. What is reported is the GUI resolution. No matter that, the videos will run in 4K on a 4K TV (if you use mediacodec(surface), which is the default).
As 15.2 did not have mediacode(surface), yet, a shield specific hack made everything running in 4K (which the shield can handle, but no other box).

Going to Videos > TV Shows is usually a skin thing, and can depend on how you exit the TV Shows screen for what you see when you load it back up. The last time I used Confluence, if I was using BACK to go to the home menu, I would start at the root (videos), but if I escaped out it would take me back to the TV Shows list. You might want to poke around in the home menu settings for whatever skin you're using to solve that one.

For your scraping issue, it seems like there are a couple of things at work. The "episode listing looks like it just displays the file name" part might mean you're using the file browser and not actually opening the library (this could also be part of your first issue). Again, look at the skin settings for your home menu to make sure you're opening the correct thing. If your fanart/pics are all local, they'd show up in the file browser as well.

When you were setting up your sources, did you specify your tv show folder contained TV Shows, and did you choose an appropriate scraper? After that you should make sure that the "selected folder contains a single tv show" and "exclude path from library updates" are unchecked. Once the source is created, hit the context menu (hold the select button) and choose "scan for new content". Kodi should then scan your folder and start downloading all the metadata from whatever scraper you choose.

Thanks for the feedback Koying, and my apologies for the noob responses. I just can't understand why other installs of Kodi show the actual screen sizes of my displays.

For example, I installed v16rc1 on a Note 2014 and both the debug log, and the system information screen report a resolution of 2560x1600. And while I know it's different platform I installed v16rc1 on a Win10 machine Kodi reports a resolution of 2560x1440. In fact, on the W10 machine, I can freely change the display resolution from 1080 to 1440 and each time, Kodi reports the new resolution properly. Unfortunately, my monitors don't have HDMI so I can't hook the SATV to them to see what happens

Again, my apologies for beating a dead horse here, and I truly appreciate the time and effort of the devs on this product.

The SATV doesn't allow for passthru resolution, I can't think of a good way to confirm that video's aren't being downcoverted.
