Linux ChromeBox Kodi E-Z Setup Script (LibreELEC/Linux+Kodi) [2017/02/21]
(2016-03-25, 02:00)inamiks Wrote: if I have a standalone setup already, what do I have to do to get to the login chronos part, I'm a bit confused. I run helix right now.

when I boot there is some jargon at the top of the screen then it loads into kodi. thanks for any help!

You don't, since you're not running ChromeOS anymore. What are you trying to do - - upgrade OE/Kodi I presume? 4.x releases are too old to directly upgrade to Jarvis, so your best bet is a backup and do a clean install

Yes I am trying to upgrade oe/kodi. To do a clean install do you mean to follow the instructions of resetting to stock? or am I following the standalone firmware updater. I am confused on how to run scripts in OE.

you don't - for a standalone setup, the EZ Setup script is only for the initial setup. After that, everything OE/Kodi related is handled like it would be on any other PC. The Chromebox wiki page has links and instructions on how to update. In your case, since you need to do a clean install, simply download the install image, create a bootable USB installer, and then install. You can try backing up your existing userdata to USB (OpenELEC Settings / General / Backup) and then restoring after the clean install, but given you're jumping two full versions, I'd recommend just reconfiguring from scratch vs restoring and hoping everything migrates correctly.

Sorry if this is allready answered. But when upgrading to beta. We will loose the Fritsch enhancements? AFAIK Fritsch left the development.
Will this feature released in further OE versions?

Kodi 16 doesn't have the EGL enhancements that the v15.2 tech preview builds do, but Kodi v17 will, as it will be part of the mainline code there. fritsch and fernetmenta are hard at work now on it, have been for months.

there was a disagreement between some of the Kodi devs and fritsch took a strong position and was going to walk away, but it was ultimately resolved

I received my Asus Chromebox and I'm about to configure things. I’m undecided about dual-boot vs. standalone (OpenELEC).

What has been the general experience going either way?

I think that depends on how much you think you'll use the ChromeOS side of things (and for what) vs how much of a pain you'll find it to reboot and use keyboard shortcuts to select between the two OSes. I use/recommend the standalone OE setup, and don't even have a keyboard connected (just IR remote), but not everyone's use case is the same

Any idea when we will start to see Kodi v17 builds? Kodi v16 has a bug with thumbnails for generic video libraries (i.e. without a movie or tv show scraper) that I read is resolved in v17, and the main reason why I'm still on v15.

unofficial / v17 dev builds have been available for months now - see: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=238393; it's still in the alpha stage however, so don't expect the stability of 15.2. Also, for many users there's really no incentive to upgrade to v16, given it's lack of EGL rendering, so sticking with 15.2 isn't a bad thing.

Thanks Matt. I guess I needed a little more convincing that my thought of leaning toward the standalone OE setup was the right one. You just helped my decision to move forward with standalone/OE. The other problem I just thought about is the fact that my setup will be in the den where the entertainment experience is shared by others. I would barely get an opportunity to boot into Chrome or Windows and for what, nothing more then what I would do while watching TV now with my MAC book in my lap. Wink

Does the E-Z Setup script for an initial setup give me an option to install 15.2?

yes, when using the EZ Setup script to create the USB install media, it will ask if you want to use the OE 7.0 beta w/Kodi v16 (Y / default) or if you want to stick with the v15.2 EGL version (N). You can also download the installer image and create the install media yourself using the links on the wiki page.

Okay glad that Fritsch determined to stay and that the problems are solved. He is a great value for us Chromebox users.

I will stick to kodi 15 indeed. Don't want to loose EGL

I had dual boot setup... Even triple boot with Windows.
But I hardly touched ChromeOS or Windows.
Now on standalone and the bootime is a major difference.

So for me definitely Standalone.

I agree with Matt. I installed dual boot with oe and chrome os a year ago and I only booted into chrome once (to claim the Google Drive promotion). Like Matt, I don't keep a mouse or keyboard attached to it either

I'm thinking about reinstalling fresh standalone when I upgrade to either kodi 16 or 17

Matt, for an initial install should I follow the steps at the start of this thread or the Wiki?
