OK here it goes:
- SMB with VTB: unwatchable lag + out of sync
- NFS with VTB: unwatchable lag + out of sync
- SMB without VTB: playback OK, CPU usage 70-100%
- NFS without VTB: playback OK, CPU usage 65-80%
So I'm definitively going to use path substitution on my Macbook to swap SMB for NFS, but still I would really like to see VTB working properly on OS X.

It is working properly on osx - just not for all hardware (sorry but i hate generic statements when they are not true...)
And we all would like to see that it works for more hardware. (Would like seeing just doesn't get anything rolling sadly)

It is simply not my area of knowledge. We have 2 developers which are technically able to develop for osx (including me). I have only intel hd 4000 hardware (macmini + hackbook). And fernetmenta has hd4000 and one nvidia 320 or so IIRC. All this hardware doesnt show the problems mentioned here in the forum.
Also its completly normal to me that not all releases of kodi support all devices in the same way. (Thats one difference to companies)
So if i have the choice of allowing the overall architecture of Kodis video player to improve (by letting the videoplayer developer go for a generic video decoding approach via ffmpeg/vtb) or to stick with the own video decoder we had (that worked on more hardware but no-one on the team maintains it anymore) and leaving osx behind in the video player stuff. Well you know my decision.
There will be improvement over time because ffmpegs devs are maintaining vtb. And yes it might be that kodi 17 will not have the same playback experience for all osx harware. But in the end the video decoder code we have now is better because we have someone maintaining it on both sides (kodi and ffmpeg).
And i am prepared for the shitstorm once osx users switch to 17 (well at least i hope i am prepared). Along with the shitstorm because we dropped ios5 support and ios6 has non working vtb decoder.

Completely understand. Can we help to improve by doing ffmp get specific debug tests and send them to ffmpeg or are they already aware of the issue(s)?

Yes you got it right (logs look as expected - thx). Question is - do you have problems with normal nightly builds? So did my testbuilds improve anything for you?
