Android NVIDIA Shield TV Pro (2019 new model)

Probably due to the fact it only has 2GB RAM whereas the 2015, 2017, and Pro all have 3GB RAM.

Hi,
can someone confirm if 3840x2160 YCbCr 4:2:0 10-bit Rec. 2020 is optimal video output setting for Shield?

Mine's set to this -

code:
3840x2160 59.940 Hz
YUV 422 12-bit Rec. 709
Dolby Vision and HDR10 Ready

with 'Match content colour space' enabled.

Hmm, now i'm more confused.
From what i could read Rec. 709 is not applicable to UHD / HDR which should be Rec. 2002, and 12-bit is not much better than 10-bit. Also, 10-bit is mainstream for UHD and the step between 8-bit to 10-bit is much more significant than 10-bit to 12-bit.
Further YUV is analog and YCbCr is digital which should be more applicable to UHD / HDR.
Any reason why you chose those settings. What is the brand/make of your TV?

I'm using Samsung JU7100 series TV which supports UHD 4K and i',m looking for optimal matching setting output for the 2019 Shield

Hi, he did say he has match content colour space enabled so the setting of rec709 is immaterial, it will automatically change to rec2020 as required.
Also the 2019 shield pro needs to be set to 12 bit for Dolby Vision.

Ok, thanks, i'll try the same.
How about whitelist in Kodi? I'm not sure I understand what's best to use with Shield.
My feed is LiveTV DVB-S2 which is 1080p (interlaced I guess) and a lot of 1080p HD material 24p & 60p . Which ones should I whitelist if I want some of that AI upscaling?

You can't output 4:2:2 10-bit at 3840x2160 at 50-60Hz - it's not a supported HDMI standard - 4:2:2 is 12-bit only at that format.  10-bit content just has 0s as padding for the 2 LSBs to get to 12 bits.

4:2:2 12 bit is often preferred to 4:2:0 10 bit output as you don't get vertical chroma subsampling on UIs, photos, subtitle rendering etc. (Most UHD Blu-ray players offer 4:2:2 12-bit as an 'enhanced HDMI' output format - though for video purposes there is no real gain I suspect.

As for Rec 709 vs Rec 2020 - with the Shield supporting (or supposed to support) colour gamut switching - it probably depends which format most of your content is in?  If you have mainly HD stuff - then 709 will avoid constant gamut switching from 2020? If you have mainly UHD HDR Rec 2020 stuff then Rec 2020 as the default will be one less switch?

I am using the current Kodi release to play content from a Synology NAS, and it plays all content, including 4K HEVC without issues on both a 2019 Nvidia TV Tube and Fire TV. Recently, I’ve been using Plex for media library management with the Plex add on. The problem I have is that although Kodi can play the content without Plex, transcoding is triggered. HEVC 4K is transcoded to H264 4K, and Plex is transcoding the audio to AC3 instead of Kodi transcoding it.

The only custom settings is to set audio to 2ch, Passthrough enabled, and AC3 transcoding enabled. The MrMC fork does not have this issue. Is there a setting I’m missing? Perhaps the upcoming version of Plex which allows disabling transcoding will fix this as well.

Although that sounds like a Plex issue and not Kodi, look for direct play and enable that. I am sure your settings can be tweaked to get it working correctly.

It cant be 1080p interlaced, that would be 1080i, sorry to be pedantic.

Thanks. Upon further investigation, the files metadata had an issue. I replaced it and all plays as expected.

I have a non-pro version that only has an SD reader and no USB ports, and I don't own any SD cards.  Is there an easy way to copy a few files over to the Shield?  It's just a few thumbnails that I want to use as artwork in a Kodi skin.
