v19 D3D11 and DXVA updates - Beta test builds (merged)
(2020-08-05, 11:13)ichkriegediekri Wrote: Hi, so over a week late after Windows May update screwed up my HTPC here are my findings:

System:
AMD 2200G
Windows 10 1903
AMD driver: 20.4.2
GPU settings: RGB full, KOdi RGB full

 Fullscreen window:
DXVA – DXVA2 –  variant picture brightness, too dark or too bright but never accurate - easily to recognize as faulty
DXVA – FFMPEG - always too bright - easily to recognize as faulty
PS – DXVA2 –  colors are perfect and match the original source
PS – FF –  visual impression is good but is does not match the source as the picture is slightly brighter - impossible to spot without direct comparison

Real fullscreen:
DXVA  – DXVA2 – always way too bright
DXVA – FFMPEG – always way too bright
PS – DXVA2 – always way too bright
PS – FF – always way too bright

I did run every setting at least 3 times to ensure consistency. I also checked on my TV if it was switching to BT2020 and that was always the case.

The bottom line for me here is that HDR:
- On my 2200G it does not work with real fullscreen
- it is in general still buggy

I only have one setting which produces correct colors and even with this setting (fullscreen window with PS and DXVA2) I sometimes have to start the HDR title twice as the picture is overly bright sometimes.
Hopefully when v19 goes final and more people start using HDR it will get better.

Thank you very much for all the detailed information. However note that it does not reflect the global state of HDR Kodi for all users (luckily for Intel and NVIDIA things are much better).

Keep in mind that the experience of all Ryzen users does not have to be the same as yours.

Support for Windows 10 2004 was added in Radeon driver 20.5.1 and you are using 20.4.2 (https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/releas...win-20-5-1)

Also fixed in 20.7.1:
Quote:Fixed Issues:
Enabling Radeon Image Sharpening may cause colors to appear washed out when HDR is enabled.
https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/releas...win-20-7-1

But:
Quote:Known Issues:
With HDR enabled, Windows® desktop may experience flickering, and performing a task switch while in a game may cause colors to become washed out or over saturated.
https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/releas...win-20-7-1

Latest version seems is 20.8.1

@jogal
I know that it isn't representative, but it shows that Ryzen isn't optimal for HDR.

I'll check out the new driver this weekend and maybe even Win 2004 again.
The changelog suggest that there should be some improvements made.
Thx

Regarding Windows 10 2004, it is highly recommended to install this update since address HDR issues:

July 31, 2020—KB4568831 (OS Build 19041.423)
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help...-kb4568831

I think it is not installed automatically yet since it is marked as optional.

Can also be downloaded here:

Thumbs Up
Thank you jogal!

I've using v4.1.0 (01-08-2020) version for a week now and watched several movies both HDR10 and non-HDR ones. 24p playback is very smooth. I've not experienced any stutters or problems on my system.  No crashes or problems have occurred.

System:
Intel Core i5-9600K
GeForce RTX 2070 Super (driver v446.14)
Win 10 x64 v1909

Could be due to insufficient video memory. Can you post a capture of graphics adaptor properties?

Kodi still crashes on playback as of v4.2.0: adiqumavek.kodi (paste)

Did you do a clean install of the beta build? I was running into exactly the same issue as you. I had to delete my user data while uninstalling Kodi before installing these prototype builds. No more crashing issues since.

Hi
Which Windows Version and driver are you using? - I just tried Windows 2004 again, installed newest 20.8.1 Radeon driver and jogals recommended HDR update for Win10 and HDR just won't work - always a black screen when Is tart a HDR file.

My TV says "V VOLL" - which means adjustments for 4K DCI are in place - which doesn't make sense as the Kodi log shows it is correctly switching to 3840 x 2160 @ 23,98hz.

Same thing happens when I switch to HDR in Windows settings - HDR seems bugged within Windows to me

Edit:
Ok it seems HDR is not bugged. It will work via ycbcr just fine with all modes.
Culprit is when I use RGB and set 10 bit the screen will go blank - so its either windows or the driver causing this.

Edit 2:
It is the driver. When I revert Windows back to 1903 and use the radein driver 20.8.1 I have the same issue.

@skowski : Try clean install or portable mode. GT 1030 only has 2GB of video memory but it is not the cause of the problem. Windows uses 4 GB of shared RAM and in total you have 6 GB. The crash occurs very soon before opening the DXVA2 decoder (the message does not appear in the log). If you still have problems post the log activating debug mode to have much more information.

@ichkriegediekri : Try without AVR or check this FAQ http://marantz-uk.custhelp.com/app/answe...ot-working

The AVR works just fine with RGB full 10bit and Windows 10 and the older 20.4 driver - there is no reason why it should be the AVR causing this if a driver change is all that's needed to reproduce this issue

As a side note:
The denon FAQ assumes a ycbcr connection anyways since it's talking about deep color and 422

Yep because is quite old "Published 04/08/2016 07.15 PM  |  Updated 05/12/2017 02.09 PM"

The most important points for me:
Quote:4. If you are using a 2017 (or later) model, please make sure, the 4k Signal Format setting in the AVR - if available - is set to Enhanced. You can find this settings in Video section of the menu of your AVR.

Quote:7. Disable the video conversion in the AVR.

Same I can say for Windows 10 2004 "there is no reason why it should be the Windows 10 2004 causing this"  since me and many other people have it working in RGB full Wink

Yeah I guess it is the drivers, I am tired of trying [emoji23]

Clean install did the trick. Not only has Kodi stopped crashing, but the rendering issues I was having with DXVA2 are gone as well. Thanks for your help

Spoke too soon. After clean install Kodi still crashes while changing the monitor refresh rate: uticahatum.kodi (paste)
