Trying to make games work in Kodi. Not succeeding.

Here's the log.

It might take me til the weekend to get to this.

We have the following two folders in the userdata folder:

Code:

addons/
userdata/addon_data/

BIOS files should go in addon_data so that they don't get overwritten.

It might be the case that BIOS files don't work in addon_data, in which case I'll need to fix this.

I put colecovision.rom in the addon_data folder and it crashed Kodi.

I put colecovision.rom in the addon_data/game.libreto.gearcoleco/resources/system folder and then it worked.

Perhaps it's my ignorance but now that I've successfully started a game, it always pops up with a prompt to continue an autosaved game.  Which is fine, but there seems to be no way to not start it from an autosaved game if I wanted to start from scratch.  Perhaps this is by design, cz then you'll always have your highest score saved?  Anyway, if you're supposed to be able to not start from a saved game I don't see a way to.

What else...oh, controller.  OK, let's see the settings.  Hey, there's the controller!  And keypad keys!  Computer mouse...I guess that's for trackball games?  That's cool, takes the place of the trackball expansion module.

If you want to be all complete about it, Colecovision came out with a Super Action Controller which you may already know about, but if you don't it had a pistol grip for the right hand with four  buttons on the grip, then a joystick on the top for your left hand and a keypad.  And, come to think of it, a little half-circle dial in the bottom of the grip that I think would've been used for paddle games like Breakout.  I never had one of these, but some games I think were made for the SAC and you couldn't play them without them, although you could play all the standard games with either type of controller.  I think the games that required that controller had Super Action in the name, like Super Action Baseball and so on.

Well I think I will see if I can actually start a game!  I'll report back later.

Still not letting me map buttons...oh, right, we're waiting on whether the nightlies will put my user profile at risk.  Did you find out?  If it's a hassle, if you can tell me what to back up I don't mind destroying my user profile and then restoring it.

Just screwing around, I'm reporting things as I see them...

I just changed the overscan from Disabled to Full (320 width), just to see what it would do, and it crashed Kodi.  When I restarted Kodi and went back, the setting was remembered, though.  Seems to have been a one-off?  Now I can change to any of those settings and it doesn't crash.

Aspect ratio changes didn't do anything, if they were supposed to.  I changed from 1:1 to 16:9 and restarted the game.  When that didn't work I restarted Kodi.  Still looks like a 4:3 box on my widescreen TV.  Not that I would ever change that, I wouldn't want to play it stretched or anything, just seeing what would happen.

Don't know what up/down left/right is supposed to do....

No sprite limit is disabled...I suppose this means that when you're playing a game and you have more than four (?) moving things in a horizontal line they will alternately blink like they used to in the old days, and when you enable it it allows this to not happen?  Interesting, if that's what that means.

Spinner support, OK, so you do know about the Super Action Controller.  Sorry for doubting you.  Oh, yeah, and the wheel controller.  For Turbo and...little else.

Rotation.  Does nothing except put a transparent bar across the bottom.  I wonder what it's supposed to do.  Same for video filter.  And stretch mode.

OK, I think I've done all I can do without hearing from you, GB.

A minor quibble whilst I'm exploring...after you start the game you get an info box saying "playing Donkey Kong complete" or something like that.  That's not really necessary.  I mean, if I'm playing Donkey Kong, that will tell me whether I'm playing Donkey Kong.  (shrug)

Sorry for being MIA the last week, my time's been taken up by my day job, and I ended up working all weekend. When work dies down (hopefully within the next week) I'll return to helping with ColecoVision.

Hey, no problem.  I know how lousy old work gets in the way of real life.  :-D

Reporting back, my work project is done and I'm moving into more of a support role for the next few weeks. Now I'm rotating back into side projects. I'm gonna take some time off then pick up ColecoVision again.

I actually picked up a side job, which has unfortunately taken up the time I would otherwise spend on Kodi. I'm sticking with RetroPlayer (which turns 11 this year) but it might be a while before I can start up Kodi development again.

All right, congrats and good luck with the new job!  If you find some time at some point, I'm quite willing to contribute.

For sure. I love getting games to work in Kodi so we'll return to this someday.

It's winter break, which means time for kodi!

To get started again, I updated gearcoleco and bluemsx to the latest versions. bluemsx in particular has a new setting named "Enable Colecovision Keyboard Mapping".

Do you want to get started working on colecovision again? I forget where we left off.
