Solved Cannot connect to Kodi servers from within app
#1
Exclamation
Hardware: Nvidia Shield TV Pro
Software: Android TV 9 (latest available, OS freshly installed), Kodi v21.1 (Omega)

Freshly installed both OS and Kodi app from Play Store.

The app cannot connect to Kodi servers from what I can tell. It cannot download dependencies, I have to manually install them. It cannot connect to the official Kodi Add-on repository ("Could not connect to repository."). When installing addons, the log says:
Code:
requires xxxxxx version xxxxx which is not available, error <general>: CAddonInstallJob[xxxxx]: The dependency on xxxxx version xxxxx could not be satisfied.

First, I thought it's a networking issue since I use a new router. But I just installed Kodi on my Mac and from the same network I can access everything perfectly fine.

Not sure what to do at this point.

Some logs, not sure if helpful at all tbh: https://paste.kodi.tv/dipusamiju.kodi

More interesting part -> I recorded the failure of fetching from Kodi servers: https://paste.kodi.tv/iwohasejey.kodi

One more thing: It's not due to any third party addons or anything like that. Fresh OS, fresh Kodi install, same thing.

I might add: Literally everything else works. Only Kodi doesn't.

@Uendhskejfirbd - You can start by getting rid of the banned addon (wiki) repo - repository.nixgates

The forum moderators have determined that banned addons (wiki) are present on your system. To receive assistance here, these banned items must be removed. If a clean log is not submitted within 3 days, then the relevant post(s) will be removed after this time.

I had already removed it and am on a fresh install.

Here is a log. During the log, I do the following: Open Kodi, go to addons, try to open Kodi repository. Then end the logging.

The important bit:

Code:
2024-10-07 16:15:12.357 T:30379   error <general>: CCurlFile::CReadState::FillBuffer - (0x2db0079450) Failed: SSL connect error(35)
2024-10-07 16:15:12.357 T:30379   error <general>: CCurlFile::Open - <https://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/omega/addons.xml.gz?sha256> Failed with code 0:

Now I have a bit of a weird router setup.

Fritzbox Wifi -> OpenWrt Access Point -> Nvidia Shield TV Pro (via LAN/Wifi, doesn't make a difference)

You could argue that OpenWrt router has some (DNS?) issues. Because when I connect to my Fritzbox Wifi directly, I can access the Kodi repo. However - when I use my Mac and connect to the OpenWrt router, I can also access the Kodi repo. It only doesn't work on the Nvidia Shield. And the funny bit is that everything else works. Literally the connection to the Kodi repository is the single thing that doesn't work. All other related network/connection things work perfectly fine. All apps and everything else.

It might be the OpenWRT router as you say, but I think more for security settings than for DNS. Or perhaps the security settings on the Shield, given the Mac works.

Can you try via a web browser to access the mirror site both via the Fritzbox alone and also via the OpenWRT (the link that is failing for the Shield - https://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/omega/add....gz?sha256 )?

Shield
OpenWrt Router
- net::ERR_TIMED_OUT
Fritzbox Router
- worked instantly

Mac
OpenWrt Router
- first page visit took quite a long time to load, but then worked. Further page visits are instant.

That would suggest to me that there's something timing out between the Shield and the OpenWRT router - I'd suggest to look at the Shield's security set-up.
The Mac is possibly seeing the same issue, but for whatever reason is having a longer time-out and so long enough to connect and cache (leading to the further visits being instant).

It's getting a bit beyond my area of knowledge, but it's sounding like an Android set-up issue rather than a specific Kodi one from that test (given the browser is showing the same issue that Kodi is).

At this point perhaps someone else with more Shield Android-specific knowledge can jump in, as I don't own one to dive into that kind of depth.

I think it's more of a Kodi issue, since everything else is working  Confused

I tried pretty much every network setting the Shield offers, including disabling IPv6 etc.

From memory (which may not be 100% reliable), all the network stuff is handled by the underlying OS on Android, which is why I was thinking that way.
Plus given everything is working via the Fritzbox, it would indicate something configuration-specific with the OpenWRT.

The logs and errors seem to show it's a timeout issue between the OpenWRT and the shield on the security response, which could of course be either end of the connection there.

And as for everything else working - this would of course only apply to secure connections which would allow some stuff to work anyway if it doesn't need the same connection type.

But anything more specific is beyond my knowledge and experience, so here I'm going to have to hand over to the community if someone else knows more (the team is somewhat light on Android developers unfortunately).

Are you sure? Did you try to install a browser on your Shield and access the URL from there?

The fact that the Mac is taking a long time on first visit indicates that there is an issue with OpenWRT and the Mac just handles the timeout differently by waiting longer or something.

Yes, I did, see here. It's not working through browser either. When I said I think it's a Kodi issue, I didn't mean the Android app, but the hosting of the repository.
