Zidoo Z9X Kodi IEC Passthrough
#1
Hi. I have Zidoo Z9X connected to Samsung HW-Q800D soundbar. I'm just curious, why I don't have DTS-HD and E-AC3 passthrough option when passthrough output device is set to IEC? I tried to set it to RAW but there's a lot of issue like audio cut every 2-5 seconds or when you pause, rewind or fast forward the video. Is there a way to show DTS-HD specially E-AC3 in IEC passthrough? Thanks

Cause your firmware does not implement it. If you carefully check your Debug Log, you will see this during enumeration, that it fails to open 8/192 khz.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Thank you so much. I just reset my device and keep on searching the older Kodi hoping that it will show up. Haha...
Firmware is the issue not Kodi. Thank you for clearing that.

https://jenkins.kodi.tv/job/android-arm-...bi-v7a.apk - maybe the "resolves" your RAW issue a tiny bit ... maybe.

Definitely an improvement! Thank you so much. Is this changes also available with nightlies?

Nope - chances are high that it breaks one of the other 20 firmwares ;-) around. I just wrote it and tested it a bit on FireTV 4K 2nd Gen.
Can you describe a bit what now works and did not before?

I should backup this apk just in case...
Before when I watching series or movies with eac/eac3 atmos, the audio cuts every 3-5 secs sometimes it last like 1 minute but the audio is out of sync. Most of the time it doesn't stop so I have to switch to IEC passthrough and enable trascoding.
The issue also start when you resume, pause, rewind or fast forward the video.
But now the issue is gone and the audio is perfectly in sync. Just when you rewind or fast forward, the audio becomes out of sync a little. I just stop & play again when that happens.
I also tried to play TrueHD Atmos and the issue I have before with eac3 is there. DTS-HD play as DTS only. But TrueHD & DTS-HD plays really well with IEC passthrough.

Quick tested on Shield and this improves a lot DTS-HD MA in RAW:

Before --> audio cuts every few seconds after pause or skip and never stabilized unless stop and resume playback.
Now --> audio returns normally after pause or seek. Sometimes there is a single dropout but then it stabilizes.

AC3, DD+, DTS and TrueHD seems continue working (maybe TrueHD is a bit worse after pause, but before it didn't work well either depending on the length of the pause).

No regressions observed with IEC until now (smooth video and no audio issues).

I put up a PR here: https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/25829 and described a design parameter for getting back in sync. Maybe reducing the divider to 4 from 2 for RAW TrueHD is helpful, but my FireTV cannot do TrueHD in RAW so I cannot test.

last i checked (~8 months ago) kodi doesn't support AFR/ARR on Zidoo so you will still be limited when using kodi on Zidoo, recommend not using kodi on this device as the built-in player does everything perfectly already

Yeah, AFR don't work but good thing with Kodi is you can see codec information of the video. Then you can manually change resolution using your remote control or the Zidoo app. Or lock the resolution to UHD23fps which most movies & series are using. I love Kodi customization. I think it's also more fun watching series using Kodi.

to each their own
i use zidoo for local media (full bluray+uhd bluray backups) which it does perfectly but that's where it ends so i also use a firetv cube gen3 strictly for streaming (disney, hulu, prime, youtube, etc.) as well as jellyfin on 2 other TVs which are not impressive secondary setups (i.e. not home theater just to watch)

if @fritsch needs logs from another device i have 2x zidoo i could test on

Just a working EAC3 for me. I thought DTS-HD don't work with IEC because there is only DTS option Smile
Good thing it fix something on our device. And I seen the comment above that it also improved on DTS-HD RAW passthrough.

Hi. Do you have a version of this which does not cause TMDb Helper to have constant error?

All was merged. So every nightly has that change.
