lip sync driving me mad - shield pro, marantz, samsung
#1
Hi there, sorry to be a pain, but I'm going mad on certain mkv files that are not playing correctly on my setup (they work fine when played on PC with vlc player).

Setup
QNAP 419P x 8 HDD's
10Gbps connection to QNAP switch
Samsung S95C TV, ethernet connection to qnap switch
Marantz SR6015 with ethernet connection.
nvidia Shield Pro, ethernet connection to qnap switch. HDMI connection to Samsung 'one' box.
Kodi: 12.1

So, all streaming works fine on shield. Netflix, disney+ etc. Even movies I've transcribed work fine streaming from qnap to nvidia/tv.

However, some episodes of some tv shows (eg, Fifth gear) work fine, but others do not.

Symptoms.
Bad lip sync. Within a minute or less, the sync is out.. Will keep on playing, but then after about 10 mins, it will jump and correct the sync. Then a min or less later, it is out again. Repeat.

I've change lots of settings on all devices (nvidia, marantz, kodi), but still can't get these 'special' files to work.

Using media info, I can see that the ones that work are in AAC LC, 2 channels, 48kHz, where as the ones that don't work are AC3, 384kbps, 6 channel.

Shows that work well, I can see on the AMP Input: FL and FR.  It translates to Active Speakers: SW, FL, C, FR, SL, SR, TRL, TRR
Shows that don't work well, I can see on the AMP Input: LFE, FL, C, FR, SL, SR    It translates to Active Speakers: SW, FL, C, FR, SL, SR

That's the only different I can find.

I'm happy to provide what ever logs needed. Can anybody point me in the right direction? I've tried multiple changes (as recommended on this forum) to Kodi config (speakers set to 2.0, enable/disable passthrough etc), but nothing seems to 'fix' these files.

Just a last note, these 'same' problem files play fine on my pc (using vlc player), streaming from same QNAP, so I don't think it's the transcoding that is wrong, it's the interpretation on the nvidia/kodi that is causing the issue in my mind (obviously I don't have an amp plugged in to my pc!)

Definitely going to need a full debug log and possibly a sample of the affected files.

The instructions are here... debug log (wiki)

If you are using the Basic Method, then ensure the following is applied...
1.Enable debugging in Settings>System Settings>Logging,
2.Restart Kodi
3.Replicate the problem.
4.Upload the log to Kodi Paste Site manually or use the Kodi Logfile Uploader. (wiki) With either method post the link to the log back here.

If you are using the Advanced Method ensure you have correctly created and applied the advancedsettings.xml file (wiki)

In both instances, you should see the word DEBUG throughout the log.

Note: Full logs only. No partial or redacted logs
Do NOT post your logs directly into the forum. Use the Kodi Paste Site. Post the link to your pasted log in the forum

Thanks, I have pasted to the Kodi Paste Site.

Sorry for next question, first time I've used the paste. What link do you require?

Further on this. I don't seem to be able to press the Save button, it's greyed out (maybe I've already pressed it).

And lastly, I tried playing the exact same files on the shield pro via a file browser and generic 'media player', and they worked fine.

Did you check if your Shield is set to the recommended audio settings as stated here:

if you pressed save then the url of your browser would have changed, paste the link here so people can see it as indicated in the instructions of post #2

Thanks, I didn't know if publishing the URL would give access to everybody and it that was wise.

Here is the link: https://paste.kodi.tv/apogexeheq.kodi

@MrMagic, I'll try and confirm the shield settings as you have show, thanks for that.

What I can see from the log. Kodi GUI is set to 3840x2160 23,98 Hz! It should not have been. Set to 3840x2160 59,94 Hz. Then Mr. Magic linked to correct settings of Kodi - especially AFR has to be active by adjust display refresh rate to start/stop. Try it and let us know.

Thanks for responding Rokle, that is the resolution that I run, as all the systems are set to 24 (23.98 Hz) - and a lot of my content is in that format.

ie, here is one of my tv episodes (with Media Info):
First Video Stream: 9 882 kb/s, 1920*1080 (16:9), at 25.000 FPS, AVC (Main@L4)(CBAC / 4 Ref Frames)
First Audio Stream: 125 kb/s, 48.0 kHz, 2 channels, AAC LC

Note that the above file plays and sounds fine.

Below is one that has the problem with the audio sync.
First Video Stream: 8 582 kb/s, 1920*1080 (16:9), at 25.000 FPS, AVC (Component)(Main@L4)(CBAC / 4 Ref Frames)
First Audio Stream: 384 kb/s, 48.0 kHz, 6 channels, AC-3 (Dolby Digital)

To make it even more complex, take a movie I have, with higher quality audio, it works fine.
First Video Stream: 23 Mb/s, 3840*2076 (1:85:1), at 23.976 FPS, HEVC (Main 10@L5@High), HDR10+
First Audio Stream: 768 kb/s, 48.0 kHz, 6 channels, E-AC-3 JOC (Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos)

As mentioned previously, all other files (I have over 800 movies on there, and about 20 tv show series) work fine, it's only a few that don't (but they play fine on the same media play without changing settings, but using it's 'file manager')
Also, the reference above to the shield setup for Audio does not work on mine unfortunately, it might be to do with different firmware.

Here is my full setup info:

Nvidia Shield Pro
Firmware: 9.1.1 (33.2.0.157)

Resolution: 4K 23.976 Hz, HDR10 Ready

HDMI-CEC enable: OFF
System Sounds: ON
Night listening mode: OFF
audio video syc: 10 secs

 - Match content audio resolution: OFF
 - Match Dolby/PCM audio Levels: OFF
 - Play comfort noise on HDMI: OFF
 - Display volume control warning: ON
  - Dolby audio processing: OFF {I've tried on, on difference}
 - Select formats (disabled as per above)
 - Stereo upmix: OFF

KODI
Resolution: 3840x216p
Refresh Rate: 23.98
Display after change of refresh rate: Off
Set GUI resolution limit: Auto

Audio output device: AudioTrack (RAW), Android IEC packer
No of channels: 2.0
Output configuration: optimized
volume control steps: 90
Maintain original volume on downmix: On
Resample quality: Medium
Threshold for pitch correction: 2
Kepp audio device alive: 1 minute
Send low volume noise: ON
Play GUI sounds: Only when playback stopped

Not sure if this helps, but happy to provide any more info if required.

Try:

(2024-10-23, 23:26)jnrdavo Wrote: Shield TV
audio video syc: 0 secs

Kodi > System > Display
Refresh Rate: 60

Kodi > System > Audio
Audio output device: AudioTrack (IEC), Android IEC packer
Output configuration: best match

Kodi > Player > Videos
Adjust display refresh rate: On start / stop
Sync playback to display: Off

Still the same issue after a full system rebuild.

I factory reset shield, but did do a kodi backup/restore, so still the same settings.

I've changed Kodi to 60 hz, and the lip sync has resolved on one of the bad samples that I am using, but very jerky movement.
Same result for 50hz, lip sync is fine, but jerky.

File details are: 903 kb/s, 1920*1080 (16:9) at 50.000 FPS, AVC ([email protected])(CABAC / 4 Ref Frames) Audio: 128 kb/s, 48.0 Khz, 2 channels, AAC LC

So I suppose very easy for me to just change the refresh rate when I get a bad lip sync file and keep it at 23.98 for the rest of the content that seems to work fine.

Thanks for all of your support in this.
