Kodi not requesting files and media permission
#1
Hello all, Pixel Fold on Android 15. After installing Kodi from the play store it asks for storage permission at first launch. Clicking to allow this time or while using the app both result in the message "permission denied!! Exiting.." Checking permissions in Android settings, there is no permission for files and media. If I install Kodi 19 it does show the permission for files and media which I can allow and Kodi will launch but not 20 or 21. Any ideas?

Android 15 is still Beta?
Maybe look over at https://xdaforums.com/f/google-pixel-fold.12747/

Security & Privacy > Privacy Controls > Permission Manager > Files >  See more apps that can access all files > Kodi

Enable "Allow access to manage all files"

Alternative way:

Settings > Apps > Special app access > All files access

Is there a bug report on this already? Thanks for the workaround anyway!

Opened an issue at GitHub just to be told by a bot it does not follow the required format (which I am confident I followed to the letter. Only thing is that, well, if there is no permission to write to disk, that there cannot be a log file. Go figure. Maybe someone can have a look, if not I keep note of the workaround and the bug remains unsolved. Bummer.

Yeah, yeah - not so fast. Not sure if that's known already: volunteer + freetime project. Needed a bit to step by and adjust the labels. Thanks for filing the bug. As we are also short on Android devs ... will take a time.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I'm not Android dev but for me I don't think there is any bug. It's just that users are confused because Android 15 has changed the way permissions are managed.

A few points:

No app needs any permission to access the app's own storage (it makes no sense to say that Kodi can't be launched because it can't write logs to storage). Kodi logs are saved in Android\data\org.xbmc.kodi\files which is the app's private space. No permissions are needed.

Permission requested is for "Access all files" and is requested at first Kodi start:

As security measure this must be enabled on OS dialog (not Kodi GUI) and when enabled works.

This is an "special permission" and is not listed in regular apps permissions dialog:

Kodi runs in this case without any permission granted. This in on Pixel 8 (Android 15).

Permission for "all files" is managed from "Settings > Apps > Special app access > All files access" as previously stated joseluismarti and this is by design of Android 15 (no bug).

Again: this permission is enabled and works but is not visible from regular "permissions" dialog.

The bug could be that Kodi does not ask for permission or the dialog is not shown but that does not seem to be the case:

I think the cause is simply that users are not enabling the permission correctly (in OS dialog) or they think it should be visible in the "App permissions" screen (same as microphone) when it is not.

Or it's always easier to find any stupid reason to not provide a debug log file that provide the debug log  Smile

Quote:Some examples of special permissions include:

Accessing all storage data.

Quote:To grant a special permission to the app, a user must navigate to this page: Settings > Apps > Special app access.

Quote:Request special permissions

Unlike runtime permissions, the user must grant special permissions from the Special App Access page in system settings. Apps can send users there using an intent, which pauses the app and launches the corresponding settings page for a given special permission. After the user returns to the app, the app can check if the permission has been granted in the onResume() function.

Anyway I was too dumb to get Kodi running without digging through forums first and I feel that's a medium good user experience after an initial install. It is the one and only Android app I know that needs me to grant special permissions for normal start on first run and does not send be to the corresponding settings page. Any other app I own asks through the dialog just as the info message suggests or sends me to where I can do the relevant settings.

So I suggest something has to happen to give Android users a smooth start. Wouldn't you agree? Or am I holding it wrong?

You sure you want to stand with this statement? I consider that rude. Well, show me how to make Kodi create a debug log in this case, and I am more than happy to (I am well aware how to do it and did it once Kodi in fact starts).
