Best Kodi Media Player Options 2025
(2025-01-07, 21:31)hdmkv Wrote: Thanks, a little hesitant after reading that. Main reason for interest is being able to reboot to Android OS side w/a nice GUI than the tablet-based one Ugoos has for primarily SmartTube (YouTube). I can never get YT to work via the Kodi add-on. Think @clarkss12 has installed SlimBOXtv on several of his Android boxes & can comment.

Apparently that is one of the few media players that I have not installed the Slimbox firmware on, at least as I recall.  I just checked and it is running the Ugoos UI and not slimbox UI.
I know you have already visited this link, but for others looking for that firmware.

https://slimboxtv.ru/ugoos-am6-pro-plus/

As you are aware, I have swapped firmware's for years, so I am not hesitant to do that.   It is really hard to brick one of these media players by swapping firmwares.

Thanks... I'll try it on one my my 2 AM6B+ units.

Can't you just use another launcher that suits your GUI taste? On ALL my boxes that I use Android I install "ATV Launcher Pro", and set it the same across all boxes.
I use it on regular (tablet) versions as well as on ATV ones. BTW, on AM6B+ it's very easy to swap launchers...

That's a good idea, or using Projectivy.

I did it. Backed up the whole CE installation on a USB stick, then redid everything from scratch to install Slimbox. Then installed CE following the normal procedure, moved the installation to internal and then restored the previous installation from USB stick. Worked perfectly. Slimbox comes with SmartTube installed by default.
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first (usually it's enough to follow instructions in the second post).

Which Slimbox version did you install, there are 4 of them: 2 for encrypted and 2 for unencrypted box versions?

Nintendo Switch 2 has been annouced, perhaps a new version of the Nvidia Shield could also be on the way based on the same Tegra SoC like the Switch/Shield(2019) were.

That would be awesome.

I see two non-stock f/w options, one encrypted, the other not. I assume encrypted = unrooted, and that would be the one to use if we haven't rooted our AM6B+? I tried Projectivy and found it just okay vs. more of an Android TV feel. Still feels like a tablet experience vs. a TV experience, just a bit more button-press friendly vs. keyboard/mouse.

Edit: You're right 4, not 2.

yeah I mentioned this 2 months ago with some replies

The shield according to my survey full of pirates is the most popular and already has a userbase. it will sell well and even the current gen is capable and holds its own against modern offerings.
seems a no brainer that it will be released. they will be fine for another 10 years lol

Thanks for updating the Vero V entry, but you can now remove the 'no Dolby Vision playback' line and the asterisked comment. 'No DV player-led playback but Profile 5 is output as HDR/SDR to non-DV displays' could replace it.

Thanks, updated... I'm tempted to (re)try Vero V. Not that I need any more media players w/AM6B+, X96 X10 Pro and generic S905X4 boxes w/CE; Fire Cube 3's; onn 4K Pro; a miniPC w/LE; Dune Real Vision 4K Plus; and have a Zidoo Z9X Pro coming. Won't catch up to @clarkss12, but getting there Wink Blush .

Wow that's some collection.
I have 2x shields , Apple tv , ONN basic , ONN Pro and a couple of firesticks.
That basic ONN , am wondering if it can be flashed with CoreElec ?
Reply
onn players have locked bootloaders, so afraid no CE.

I see we are not alone in our addiction.  Maybe we can start a virtual therapy session.

Apple TV 4K (multiple), nVidia Shield TV (second generation), Google Chromecast with Google TV, Amazon Fire TV Sticks (various)...
Raspberry Pi (all models pretty much), Odroid N2, Odroid C4.
AM6B+, Vero V, Vero 4K, and various other AMLogic boxes...

Apple TV 4K is used for all streaming viewing - it's just by far the best DRM solution with content frame rate switching I've found.

AM6B+ (CoreElec), Vero V (OSMC) and Raspberry Pi 5 (LibreElec) are my main boxes for Kodi.  All have pluses and minuses. (My AM6B+ chokes on high bitrate 1080p50 10-bit SDR h.265/HEVC self-encoded stuff that the Pi 5 plays perfectly for instance)
