seems like this work has stopped..?
this is the only feature, in my opinion, that the xbmc lacks in order to make it a stand alone media box.
an external tuner / pre-prosessor that communicates with xbmc would be the bomb!

since mythtv is a client/server application, is there a technical reason why we cannot implement a full mythtv client on the xbox and work with a mythtv server running at the backend?

fyi: i'm a long time c/++ programmer and i have some spare time over the next two months. i've been a long time xbmp/xbmc user and decided to contribute my time to this project.
adding pvr functionality to xbmc is my primary goal for the next couple of months.
to that end, i've read the thread and have a few ideas i'd like to contribute.
firstly, why are you thinking about build this "digitalizer" box? i've currently got a functioning xbox based pvr system built around xbox-linux, mythtv and a usb tuner. instead of totally reinventing the wheel, why not build a client for mythtv into xbmc and run the capture server on an xbox using xbox linux and a couple of the usb tuners? i use the hauppage (sp?) usb pvr and it works well. i have two of them connected via xbox controller -> usb cables. they have a built in mpeg2 encoder, so the cpu load for handling two streams is well within the xboxes abilities. based on my results, four encoders should be manageable with a single "server" xbox.
in further support of my implementation of the "digitalizer", the cost of this solution is very reasonable.
xbox: $100 @ pawn shop
tsop mod: $.05 worth of solder
200 gb hdd: $200
2x wintv pvr usb: $300 new online or less on ebay/etc...
i don't think there is any other way to implement the server more cost effectively. please advise.
as far as writing an xbmc client for mythtv goes, i don't think the job would be horrendously difficult. the hardware encoder in those hauppage boxes outputs good ole mpeg2 video. of course, xbmc already supports mpeg2 decoding and playback. i've explored the mythtv protocol and it isn't terribly complicated. i think the biggest issue would be handling all of the features that myth allows. (program guide, etc...)
the only other hurdles that i can envision are myth's dependance on mysql and the need to develop a clean interface/configuration tool/installation tool for the server xbox.
the dependance on mysql shouldn't be that difficult. they have an o/s client class that should be easy to port. as for making installation/configuration/maint. of the (linux) server side manageable for the average non-linux savvy xbmc user, i don't think a user friendly installer would be terribly difficult to write.
i hope my input hasn't stepped on anyones toes. since i've already got the requisite hardware to implement the solution as i've described it, i plan to develop my solution whether i receive any help/support from xbmc developers. i have thought my plan out very thoroughly and think i have the best available solution. if any of you have any input, suggestions or would like to assist in my efforts; i welcome your emails and would be grateful for any positive advice or suggestions.
thanks in advance,
sean
