This all looks very exciting and kudos to the XBMC team. OK so let me apologise for the basic nature of my questions & observations but if someone could take the time to help me out I'd be grateful.

Cracking open the ATV doesn't look too difficult (if a little daunting) and there's a good guide here http://techrepublic.com.com/2346-10877_11-60899.html but I'm confused over the snipping/cardboard wrapping suggestions here http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=64634.

1) Can you not reconnect the wi-fi antenna connectors to the Crystal HD card?
2) What exactly is the cardboard suggestion in aid of? Is this an anti-static measure?
3) Once the CrystalHD is installed doesn't the ATV throw a bit of a hissy fit when it sees new hardware installed?
4) In the process of installing the card what is the effect on the "regular" functions of ATV outside of XBMC?
5) Any clue as to a release of XBMC that incorporates code to take advantage of the new hardware?

1) why would you? trying to transmit the picture to another TV?

2) to prevent short circuit

3) its Apple, no hissy fits

4) aside from not having Wi-Fi, no other problems

5) SVN trunk incorporates the the code, you need the kext and lib to use it. Its coming soon

I just threw out the wifi card and wrapped the antenna connectors in electrical tape.

can someone just clearly explain the "cardboard" solution. i would be worried the cardboard would heat up and catch on fire, my apple tv gets rather hot...

are you just suppose to wrap the actual card in cardboard and leave in the case, perhaps taped somewhere so not to roll around?

I have not used any cardboard, just install the card and tape the antenna connections to the side with electrical tape.

Please... they even throw hissy fits in their commercials. Ripping on every other company. Apple's new business model is to use PC hardware and claim they are much better then PC. When actually they basically stole free shit, made it look cool and called it their own. Now they provide uncompiled software so they can claim it's the user's fault and people who are familiar with linux now become "gurus".

Apple pisses me off. The only good thing they've ever devloped is the iPhone, and really it's only the software base that's good about it.

@reven, autoignition of paper is some 230C (450ishF). You're gonna melt the plastic and the device will fail before that starts fire. The short is far more likely to cause you problems.

how is that relevant to the question if BC card will work in ATV?

it takes 10 minutes to install the card and the driver, no hissy fits. prove me wrong.

Thanks Amet and A Milton for your response. I currently use the wireless card to stream my video which I know isn't going to be possible for HD content but I like the idea of being able to undo my hacking if it all goes pear.

Without sounding funny, there are tons of threads about the broadcom card (with pros, cons, install instructions etc).

I'd suggest you use the search function and do some digging around the whole forum.

once the drivers are available there will be an easy solution for an installation, maybe something as easy as downloading it via Launcher.

Just unplug the two antenna cables and tape the wires someplace that they will not flop around and potentially short other components. It's trivial.

Yes, the AppleTV does get hot, it's designed as one big heat sink. That's normal.
