This combination will give you better performance than the little Lenovo below.

This will be easier route than the above and less noisy, smaller case and it's ready for XBMC out of the box. The overall price might be less too!
>Alienware X51- do it all HTPC
>Simplify XBMC configurations
>HOW-TO Bitstreaming using XBMC
I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

hi guys, i'm planning on building a budget HTPC and below is the parts i have decided on. please let me know what you guys think. i noticed that in the guides a separate video card is added in all the builds. will this cpu w/ gpu power be good enough to run 1080p mkvs? that is all i'll be needing.

-Intel G620
-Biostar H61MHB HDMI motherboard http://www.amazon.com/Biostar-H61MHB-Int...768&sr=1-1
- hec case w/ 300 watt psu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6811121100
- 4gb ddr3 g skill ram
- old 500 gb 2.5'' seagate HDD.

also i am currently using my macbook and running plex as an htpc front end. i don't really search for the metadata by each episode and movie etc. is there an option on xbmc where i can just view files in a folder and play them without having to sort them into TV Shows/Movies?

thanks for your help.

I dont know if the IGPU is enough to play the big files. Its close but you could add a GPU later or go with the i3 and then no prob
As for the file views in XBMC. There are a number of options. You can view them as they are in folders (file view) or as scraped and arranged in any form ie Title, genre, year, actor and so on. (Library View)

Hi,

I'd like to build my first HTPC over the next few weeks or months and what I did till now was choosing hardware which would fit my performance needs. I came up with the following:

APU: AMD A8-3850
Mobo: ASRock A75M
RAM: 8GB Kingston HyperX 1333 CL7

SSD: Kingston SSDNow S100 16GB
SSD: OCZ Vertex2 60GB

HDD: 2TB --
HDD: 2TB --

I want to use the XBMC primarily for watching live tv. Second would be watching movies. Additionally the second HDD is to be used for backing up other PCs in the network.
What I came up to until now is that I'd like to install Linux (possibly Ubuntu) at the smaller SSD while installing Windows at the larger one. Linux would be used for watching TV and so on while Windows would be used to play some games. (Backing Up would be done using Linux).

My problem now is that AMDs APUs don't work well using XBMC on Linux but I don't want to Windows 7 for watching television due to the boot time (Who wants to wait for his television 20ish seconds until it is booted?). Keeping the system in standby all the time is no option.

If anybody had enough endurance to read till this point my question:
Is there a hardware configuration using another CPU and GPU solution (intel and NVidea maybe) which works fine using XBMC on Linux without being more expensive or loosing performance wise?

Hi there,

Very new to the concept of a HTPC and looking for some advice.

Current setup:
1. Synology DS1511+ w/music in .flac and videos in .mkv.
2. Samsung 46" LCD capable of 1080P playback.
3. B&W Panorama Soundbar.
4. Oppo BDP-93.
5. Harmony 650 remote.

The problems:
1. Living overseas in Denmark, where cable TV in English is not cheap and lacking choice.
2. Media interface for Oppo is poor.
3. Using Oppo to play music requires using TV to find content.

Objective:
1. Use XBMC as interface for playback of recorded TV shows, music, movies, home vidoes, pictures (70% of use).
2. Watch TV, live sports via web (20% of use).
3. Surf Internet (10% of use).

My possible solution:
1. Move Oppo into another room, replacing it with HTPC (was originally thinking AsRock Vision 3D, but this is likely overkill for my needs? Maybe:
Zotac ZBOX AMD E-350 (1.6GHz Dual Core) Barebone Mini PC (ZBOX-AD02-U) + 4 or 8 GB of RAM
+ 64GB SSD or 500 GB regular hard drive
+ Windows 7 (Home Premium? Ultimate?)
2. Move Harmony 650 with Oppo, replacing it with Ipod Touch with hipporemote? XBMC remote?

Questions:
1. Is this a reasonable solution? What changes would you make?
2. Could I just add a cheap nettop with XBMC installed to direct content to to play through my Oppo?
3. Is the Ipod Touch the best solution for not having to use my TV to listen to music?

Thank you in advance...I apologize for my ignorance on this stuff, but I am very new to this and not very technosavy.

Cheers.

eskro,

Thank you for you reply.

I had read your starter thread previously (hence the ZBOX-AD-2-U vs the Vision 3D)...an excellent post and much appreciated.

However, I guess my big question is whether there's an easier alternative...mating something to run XBMC with the OPPO?

An easier alternative to iPod touch to act as a remote?

Thanks.

Just select HDMI as your sound in the sound properties and 5.1 DTS in XBMC properties

Sry if I got something wrong but I don't see any Intel configuration which is equally powerful as the AMD one I chose. Did I misunderstand something there? ._.
