So it looks like vc1 1080i is not supported by XBMC.

Is the only way around this to re-encode them?

FYI the mkv files I'm having trouble with are BBC's Planet Earth and Life. Windows Media player classic has no problem playing them.

It's my long long long quest... still haven't found a viable solution.

Although... I have only Life with this format, by Planet Earth BDs are h264 progressive...
