[Apple TV1] Most recent "how-to guide" for installing XMBC Linux on ATV1?
#1
Question
Howdy all!

I've had XMBC installed on my ATV1 (with a CrystalHD card) for several months now...but suddenly it's started acting goofy (losing sound, forgetting skin settings, etc) so I decided to go ahead and reinstall XMBC.

Back in the day I piece-mealed the information from these forums, and with a lot of trial and error got it to work. I installed it via a USB stick, using one of the images found here on the forums.

That's been months and months ago though, and I'm sure things have changed drastically since then.

I found this link on the forums, is it the latest and greatest way to install XBMC on my ATV?

Thanks for your help pointing me in the right direction!

update:

XBMC successfully running on my AppleTV again Smile

Quick question: With this version, I have to keep the USB stick in my AppleTV, correct? Is there an advantage to having XMBC loaded on the ATV itself (speed or anything like that?)

In the installer you can choose between installing to an usb flash drive or the internal hard drive.
If you want it installed on the ATV itself, choose internal hard drive.

You have to back up the original ios, when installing to your internal drive, if you ever want to go back to ios.

You can reconstruct an ATV internal drive without having taken a backup first. But it involves creating a patchstick for the purpose and doing some commandline voodoo. Just throwing that out there for those that don't have a backup.... more details here (scroll down to "oops I did not make a backup!"):

as usual, where the ATV is concerned, Davilla has thought of everything!
