I am also running OpenElec Frodo V12.2 and Aeon MQ5 and so far Artist SlideShow V1.6.2 seems to be fine for me here.

I just tried to play an album from the Music menu's "Random Albums" skin widget and it played OK and AS displayed artwork for it OK etc.

Actually, it failed when I play music, wherever I do that. It's not related to the random album menu at all, I was just describing the steps to reproduce the error in the debug log.
Glad to know it works with OpenELEC and Aeon MQ5, I hope it will for me too

In theory everything should be working on all platforms, but I don't have an OpenELEC machine with which I an test. Could you post a debug log?

To reproduce the problem and log a trace, I started openelec, selected the music menu in xbmc, and launched a random album on the top menu.
Skin is Aeon MQ5.

It seams there's also other errors and weird stuff not related with artistslideshow at all, i'll try to fix that if necessary.

Looks like another freaking unnicode error. I really and truly hate unicode. I'll have to look at it more later. In the meantime, go to your XBMC userdata folder and theen go to addon_data/ArtistSlideshow. If there is not a file named migrationchec.nfo, create it with a text editor and put '1.6.0' (without the quotes) as the only line in the file. If the file is there, just change the contents to say '1.6.0' (again without the quotes). That will tell AS to bypass some migration routines from older versions that you don't need to run on a fresh install. Restart XBMC and then you should be good to go.
